Avatar has sat proud at the top of the movie box office for six years now, but is James Cameron's CGI-filled blockbuster about to finally be dethroned?

According to box office analysts, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is currently on track to surpass Avatar's global haul of $2.78 billion, making it most lucrative movie of all time.

Of course, this is hardly surprising, as before even the start of its lengthy, and let's be honest slightly exhausting, marketing campaign, analysts had suggested Disney's reintroduction of the franchise could take the top spot. Their predictions seemed vindicated when Star Wars: Episode VII went on to grab the records for biggest opening weekend both domestically and globally -- with ticket sales of $247 million and $529 million respectively.

However, perhaps we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. It should also be noted that both Jurassic World and Marvel's The Avengers were once 'on course' to overtake Avatar, but even these behemoths failed to grab the box office summit. The thing is, Avatar wasn't a huge initial success, instead it attained its position through a lengthy theatrical run and strong word of mouth which kept people piling into the cinema long after its premiere. Can Star Wars pull off the same feat? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.
