Any other day of the year I could say that Christmas came early, but today it came bang on time when FOX dropped a new red band trailer for Deadpool.
We already had a pretty good idea of what to expect from Ryan Reynolds' blackly comedic superhero flick, but this trailer teased more story, gave us a better idea of the film's tone, and even previewed one or two more serious moments which might give an insight into the Merc's fragile psyche.
Here's the trailer in full...
Amazing, right? I was convinced that [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267) was the one to beat in 2016, but now I'm all kinds of torn. Let's break down a few key talking points from the new footage.
Wade's cancer diagnosis has him scared, and using this as the jump-off point for his transformation into a superhero - even if, in his own words, "I didn't ask to be super, and I'm no hero" - makes this film instantly way darker than anything else from the Marvel/FOX universes.
This is a vengeance movie. It's not about playing the vigilante; Wade Wilson is not Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker. For him, it's personal.
"When you find out your worst enemy is after your best girl, the time has come to be a fucking superhero". Isn't that way more relatable than putting on a suit just because your city is overrun with criminals?
And speaking of his best girl, I totally buy it when Vanessa says she's no damsel in distress. This woman can hold her own, and the super-talented Morena Baccarin looks like she's in her element playing a certified badass here.
Maximum bonus points for "I pity the dude who pressures her into prom sex".
