Big time SPOILERS if you haven't watched up to season 2, episode 9 - and SPOILERS for things we know are happening in future episodes.
The Flash returns on January 19, 2016 with the mid-season 2 premiere. Like season one, we can expect season two to contain 23 episodes. The last episode of 2015, Running to Stand Still, was episode 9.
This Is What Has Happened So Far:
Henry Allen was released from prison, cleared of his wife's murder
- We've been introduced to the multiverse and visitors from it, including dopplegangers of characters we know
Jay Garrick, The Flash of Earth 2 has joined our friends on Earth 1, but Zoom has stolen his speed powers
Harrison Wells (Harry) from Earth 2 has also joined the team, but is being forced to help Zoom in order to save his daughter
Jesse Quick, Harry's daughter, is being held captive on Earth 2 by Zoom -- in the comics, she is a speedster
Zoom is on a quest to steal the speedforce from all other speedsters, and is making Barry more powerful so he has more to take
Harry is working on a potion that can give people speed powers - in the comics, this is known as velocity 9; he's up to velocity 6 so far
Cisco is becoming more comfortable with his meta-powers, slowly becoming Vibe - his comicbook alter ego
Wally West, the son that Joe never knew he had, has been introduced to the family - in the comics he is a speedster
This Is What We Think Will Happen This Season:
- Barry will reveal he's The Flash to Patty
- Patty may be killed by Zoom - maaaaaaybe
- Zoom's identity will be revealed
Here Are The New Characters We Can Expect:
Mirror Master - a villain with illusion-based powers. Confirmed for episode 10, Potential Energy.
Geomancer - a villain who has the power to create earthquakes. Confirmed. Adam Stafford is cast in the role, but appearance date unknown
Dr. Alchemy - a Central City Police, forensics officer gone bad. Not confirmed, but a producer mentioned he'd love to see during season 2.
Eliza Harmon, aka Trajectory - A scientist with a split personality who becomes a speedster. Confirmed for episode 16. Likely gets powers from Wells' Velocity formula, vs. her Lex Luthor-based origins in the comics.
Some BIG Changes Are Coming:
Killer Frost will finally arrive! In case you don't know, Killer Frost is the villainous, metahuman alter ego of Caitlin Snow. Our first glimpse came at the end of Season One when Barry was running through time, getting glimpses of things that have not yet happened, but could. Fans have been eagerly anticipating her introduction, but Danielle Panabaker has been just as vocal in her desire to go bad. This version of Killer Frost will probably be from Earth 2, keeping Earth 1's Caitlin on the side of justice, and maintaining her as a series regular.
Matt Letscher's Reverse Flash is back! But he's probably the Earth 2 version. If you recall, Matt Letscher played Eobard Thawne in season one before he stole Earth 1 Dr. Wells's identity. Since Earth 1's Eobard, played by Tom Cavanagh was erased from existence in the season one finale, it makes the most sense that we'll see an Earth 2 version who never stole Wells's identity. The alternative is that it's a flash back ... or flash forward, since he is from the future. He is confirmed for episode 11, subtly titled The Reverse-Flash Returns.
Grant Gustin Tweeted that episode 14 will blow our minds. Could this be the episode wherein Zoom's identity is revealed? With that said ...
Who Do We Think Zoom Really Is?
Barry Allen from Earth 2 - Unlikely - he lacks the build for Zoom and we'll probably meet him soon.
Eobard Thawne from Earth 2 - Unlikely - it would be a retread of season one, and we will probably meet him soon.
Eddie Thawne from Earth 1 - Possible - his body was sucked into the vortex at the end of season one. No body = not dead, even though, often times, Body = not dead in these shows.
Eddie Thawne from Earth 2 - Also possible - there's never been a mention of Eddie's E2 doppleganger.
Joe West from Earth 2 - Possible, but there's no precedent or obvious hints at this. Fans keeps mentioning it. They're crazy.
Henry Allen from Earth 2 - Our #1 bet - He's got the build, John Wesley Shipp has speedster experience (Hello, 1990s Flash!), there have been subtle clues. Not to pat myself on the back [actively patting], but I was the first to suppose this theory, waaaay back at the beginning of the season, and it has gained a tremendous amount of support since then.
And the last thing that we don't expect this season ... but we do expect some day -- a musical episode. Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdez, and Jesse L. Martin are all highly musically talented, so it would be a tragedy if this never happens. Whether it's a dream, a meta human who makes people express themselves through song and dance, an alternate universe where people spontaneously break into song ... and it isn't weird ... we don't know. This just has to happen, somehow, some day. Fans ... demand it!
Until then ... here's a preview of what's in store for us, starting January 19!
