Star Wars: The Force Awakens without a doubt was my most anticipated movie coming into 2015. I mean how could it not be? It's freaking Star Wars! However, as I look back at 2015 The Force Awakens was definitely not the best movie of 2015. The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road and Creed were all pound for pound better movies in my opinion. But comparing how you actually felt to how you thought you would feel is what makes these list fun. With that said here are my top 10 most anticipated movies for 2016.
10. Independence Day: Resurgence
Just when you thought your summer was safe again! In many ways the original Independence Day movie is the Grand Pappy of all summer block busters. Because of that when they announced they were doing a sequel the intrigue was definitely there. Was there concern that Will Smith was not returning? Absolutely, and this may have been higher on my list if Big Willy was back to save the world. With that said when I saw this trailer I was sold. The concept of reverse engineering the technology of the alien enemy and it still may not be enough is more than enough to get me there on opening day. I wouldn't be surprised if parents brought there kids out by the masses like they did for Jurrasic World. This should be good family summer fun.
2016 is a big year for Comic Book Movies and Deadpool will be the first batter up in February to take a swing at box office success. Deadpool is one of the funniest characters in all of comic books. His cynical and mature comedy screams off the pages of the comic books. And his 4th wall interaction with the reader is classic to him as a character. It will be curious to see if Deadpool will translate to the screen. My anticipation could not be higher to find out!
8. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
This movie is slipping under the radar for many as there has not been a official trailer released. However this is a very popular book about some very peculiar children that should be awesome, spooky and on everyone's radar. The cast includes Eva Green as Miss Peregrine, Samuel L. Jackson as Barron, Ella Purnell as Emma Bloom and Asa Butterfield as Jacob Portman. And with Tim Burton directing this impressive cast we should get a very peculiar movie.
7. The Nice Guys
The premise of this movie alone has me sold. Russell Crowe as Jackson Healy and Ryan Gosling as Holland March are teaming up to search for a missing girl and investigate the death of a porn star.....WHAT???!!! lol. But this is not just a comedy. It's also a thriller and a mystery and all three combined with the talent of Russell and Ryan The Nice Guys is all most a can't miss hit. Oh and did I mention that director Shane Black of Long Kiss Goodnight and Lethal Weapon is directing this duo. Just keeps getting better huh!
6. X-Men: Apocalypse
I am still geeking out on the end credit scene of X-Men: Days of Future Past. While typically I do not like end credit scenes to connect movies in a cinematic universe I thought this one was perfect considering the future was changed due to Wolverine's meddling. With that said Apocalypse looked like a god in the end credit scene of Days of Future Past and the biblical reference to Apocalypse in the trailer are very intriguing. I really can't wait to see how Xavier and the X-Men overcome these seemingly impossible odds.
5. Triple 9
Talk about being caught off guard! This movie has become my sleeper of 2016. This crazy, sexy, cool movie will be the heist film we have been waiting for. Dirty cops doing dirty things. Will they get away with it or will they get caught? Seems to be a great plot with a great cast of Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Anthony Mackie, Norman Reedus, Aaron Paul, Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor. After watching this trailer and looking at this cast I don't see how anyone could miss this movie in theaters.
4. Captain America: Civil War
So excited about the 3rd movie in the Captain America trilogy. While Tony Starks and Iron Man have charmed the general audience and become fan favorites; if Civil War is as good as expected Captain America could end up being Marvel's best Cinematic Trilogy. This movie will be filled with a bunch of characters we have seen before but also a few we have not. Civil War will mark the debut of Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we as fans can't wait to see this King properly honored on screen. And Marvel's most popular character Spiderman will share the screen for the first time with the Avengers. This will be our 3rd Spiderman in less than 10 years so our socks will need to be knocked off. But that is more than enough for Disney to get my money!
3. Rogue One
Haven't even seen a trailer yet! But I have seen The Force Awakens 4 times in its first week of being open. Disney really nailed Star Wars (on their first attempt!!!) and at this point they have not given me a reason to not believe they will get it right with Rogue One. Especially with the events of Rogue One rumored to be happening before Episode 4; I am totally expecting that old school feel of the original Star Wars trilogy. And look at that fantastic cast above. I'm sold!!!
2. Suicide Squad
Director David Ayers has assembled a Skwad.....A Suicide Squad. And these bad guys may end up giving us a really good movie experience. Villains against Villains!!! But just not any villains the worst of the worst. This movie will have Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Viola Davis as Amanda Waller will have explosives planted in their heads and force them to do the governments bidding. Will they work together or will they not? Will they try to escape? Are they trying to take down Cara Delevingne as Enchantress or Jared Leto as The Joker? We have never seen anything like this and it should be a blast if Amanda Waller has anything to do with it.
1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The TRINITY!!!! Does anything else really need to be said. Cinematically this will be the very first time we see Superman and Batman grace the screen together. Not only that the cinematic debut of Wonder Woman; the most iconic female hero of all time. We will witness the dreams and hopes of millions come true. It will be historic as people have been waiting their entire lives to see this. The movie is scripted by Oscar winning writer Chris Terrio and directed by visual directing genius Zack Snyder. Oh yea and Oscar winning director Ben Affleck is playing Batman and throwing his 2 cents on his vision of the movie. I say again history.....we are about to witness cinematic HISTORY!!! Without a doubt this is my most anticipated movie of all time at this point. With a Justice League movie in the cards in 2017 that could quickly change if Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is great.
But those are my top 10 most anticipated movies for 2016. Do you agree? Did I leave a movie off the list? What does your list look like? Please share your thoughts below.
