After several bumps along the road, including a rumored loss of the film’s main star, the [Assassin's Creed](tag:437814) movie adaptation has hit the ground running, and fans can confidently await to see the stealthy warrior come to the big screen December 21, 2016. The Assassin’s Creed saga, which has arguably become one of gaming’s most popular and beloved franchises, follows the on-going ancient battle between the Assassins and the Knights Templar.
Abstergo Industries, the modern cover for the Knights Templar, then use an innovative device called the Animus to force their kidnapped test subject Desmond Miles, a descendant of the Assassins, to relive the “genetic memories” of his Assassin ancestors in order to find the key to controlling mankind.
The raving reception of the games have prompted the creation of 9 main games, several spin-off games, and countless comics, short films, and books. That being said, you would think that renowned actor Michael Fassbender, who will bear the Assassin’s hood in the 2016 film adaptation, would have at least come across the series at least once before being approached for the role.
No. No he did not.
“I hadn’t played it before these guys approached me,” Fassbender says. “I’ve played it since mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”
While Fassbender has obviously long been deprived of quality gaming entertainment, it is comforting to know that the actor has at least toggled the controller a few times to get a feel for the Assassin spirit. With such a plethora of rich source material, what storyline will the filmmakers choose to adapt? According to the latest news, the film will instead maintain the spirit of the franchise and introduce us to a brand new character Callum Lynch, who will be embracing his ancestral parkour skills through the Assassin, Aguilar, in 15th century Spain.
Gamer fans every where hope that the Assassin's Creed movie may break the mold of infamously terrible game-to-movie adaptations (let’s face it, Max Payne and Prince of Persia didn’t do so well…) In fact, 2016 in general seems to hold high hopes for gaming movies! Let's take a look:
