It takes about 10 years to achieve overnight success, as well as a shit tonne of dedication. It's perhaps no surprise then that leading Hollywood A-lister, Jennifer Lawrence, got down and dirty when participating in the rat race. Literally.

The 25-year-old left home aged just 14 to pursue her dream of shining lights and red carpets. Such was her fragile financial state, J-Law had to stay in a downtrodden and unclean apartment in New York.

"A Rat Had Eaten My Loaf"

Talking to NPR, she said:

"There was no hot water, no kitchen, it was like a closet with a hot plate. And I got to the point where I was literally just sharing my food with rats.
I didn’t really have any money, so if a rat had eaten my loaf of bread, when I first got there, I’d be like, ‘Ew’, and throw the whole loaf of bread away, but eventually I was like, ‘God, I’m not going to be able to afford bread’, so I started just cutting around the hole that the rat had eaten."

The Hunger Games star now has an estimated personal fortune of $60 million, becoming the highest paid actress in the industry. Breaking bread with rodents probably seems a million miles away.

A Serious Dream

During her formidable teenage years, her tenacity and determination to forge an acting career became all too apparent following her rocky stay in New York. She added:

"I wouldn’t go to the bathroom… My dad still talks about that, he says, ‘That’s when I knew you were serious’… that was the turning point for my dad.”
That’s when my parents were like, ‘Yeah, I think she really, really wants to do this’.”

Although only a quarter of a century, Lawrence has had a hugely successful career. As well as two Golden Globes, she also won an Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), starring opposite Bradley Cooper.

A Joyous Occasion

Her latest film, Joy, see's her play the lead character Joy Mangano, a real-life, self made millionaire who decided not to mope around following a divorce and invented the self wringing mop. Trust me, it's better than it sounds. Just check out the trailer:

'Joy' was released in theaters on Christmas day.
