The year is running out along with our Star Wars hype. I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens last night for the third time and I still could not sit still during the movie. Anyways, we can continue to care about all the other cool movies coming out soon like The Hateful Eight, The Revenant and Deadpool. Speaking of Deadpool, which comes out in 6 weeks, there was an interview with the director of the highly anticipated film Tim Miller. This quote of his was confirmed by multiple sources like Heroic Hollywood, Comicbook.com, and more. You may be asking why this interview with director Tim Miller is so important. Well, it confirms something that slipped under our noses when Fox was transferring the rights back to Marvel. Let's see what Tim Miller said when he was discussing who he would like to see Deadpool fight in a future film.
“I’d love to see Deadpool fight Batman - no, I’m just kidding, that’s not even in the Marvel family! I’d love to see Deadpool go up against Taskmaster who’s another Marvel total fuckin’ badass. But if I was to stay inside the Fox family, I would like to see him fight X-23, the female Wolverine. The female clone of Wolverine.”
Taskmaster Is Owned by Marvel!
So according to Tim Miller, Taskmaster is not 'inside the Fox family'. Therefore, Marvel must have gained back the rights for the character. This is a very interesting news piece, especially since Marvel nor Fox never said anything about this. Fox definitely owned the rights to the character since they tried to bring him to live action but it never worked out. That could be a factor into why Fox gave away the rights to such a badass character. What is very intriguing is that sources claim he was handed over to Marvel in the Daredevil deal. Daredevil's rights were reverted back more than 2 and a half years ago, so how did we not hear about Taskmaster? The most likely thing is that when all these characters' rights were transfered, they didn't announce all the characters. The news was broken when Kevin Feige was asked whether the rights were reverted or not and he responded "Yes." This means there could be other characters that Marvel owns (most likely villains) that we have no idea about.
How Will Taskmaster Appear in the MCU?
It would have been nice to see Taskmaster fight his arch-enemy Deadpool but having one of my personal favorite B-list Marvel villains back in the hands of Marvel is reassuring. Like I said, he's a B-list villain, so there is a low chance of seeing him lead a whole Avengers movie. His powers of superhuman strength and mimicking powers are very intriguing for possibly a Captain America film, but obviously his plate is very busy right now. There are two possible ways I could see Taskmaster be introduced into the MCU. First off, he could be in a Phase 4 movie like the New Avengers. I could say a Spider-Man sequel or even be in the upcoming 2017 film but his rogue gallery is already so big. He is shared amongst multiple heroes but he has fought Spidey. The other way is being in a Netflix series. He was rumored for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Grant Ward may eventually become the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Taskmaster, but recent events in that show seem to suggest that’s not the case. I feel like the best way is in the Defenders series because that would be awesome!
Overall, I don't think it was supposed to be a coincidence that Taskmaster was announced. Tim Miller slipped some news out and it was uncovered. The actual news is 30 months old so it's almost irrelevant to the point that it could be a coincidence. It could be speculated Marvel is ready to announce him into the new Spider-Man film or something on those lines soon, but this is someone from Fox saying this. This is just to keep on the back of our minds that we know he is available and we won't speculate him to fight Deadpool.
