Basically all of the most popular and successful PC games over the years have featured mod support. It's an aspect of PC gaming that consoles can't rival, and one of the primary reasons why gamers prefer the PC. The Total War franchise has long been a part of this tradition, but that's all to end with the latest release from The Creative Assembly, Total War: Warhammer.

In order to preserve the intellectual property that is Warhammer, The Creative Assembly had to ensure that no mod support would be available for their latest Total War game. You can understand this from Warhammer's perspective, but as a gamer, this isn't exactly an ideal situation. How will this impact on fans' enjoyment of Total War: Warhammer?

Mod Support & Total War: Warhammer

As a PC gamer, how important is mod support for your enjoyment of a product? Has your engagement with previous Total War titles hinged on the presence of mods? Personally, none of the other Total War games have been able to completely pull me away from Total War: Shogun 2. While I've enjoyed campaigns since then, I'm still stuck in feudal Japan replaying the campaign and trying out various mods.

But if you're a gamer who enjoys seeing this series evolve and how The Creative Assembly update the gameplay of the Total War franchise with each installment, is Total War: Warhammer an exciting prospect? The game has been surrounded with controversy - not only because of mod support - seeing as one of the main factions of the game is locked behind a pay wall (or is available as a pre-order incentive).

While I hate these practices, I understand that The Creative Assembly and SEGA need additional funds to keep this series going. I also understand that mods may negatively impact on the intellectual property of Warhammer in a way that Games Workshop wouldn't appreciate. I'm likely to still engage with Warhammer, but I can't see the title enjoying a great deal of longevity without the ability for fans to manipulate it.

Will The Standard Gameplay Be Enough?

In light of this mod situation, I'm interested to know whether Total War: Warhammer has lost a certain degree of appeal for you. Are you disappointed by the news and how the Total War franchise is evolving? Or are you simply excited to try out the various factions in the game and enjoy another title from The Creative Assembly?
