Lightsabers are a focal point of the Star Wars universe. We all know about them and how they are the main weapon of both the Jedi and the Sith, but did you know that they themselves have a deep story to tell? Well buckle in because i'm going to tell you all about the best and the brightest sabers.

To begin its best explain where the sabers get their power from.

"Long ago in forgotten times, when the Sith and Jedi fought for control of the galaxy, weapons there were, of unimaginable power. Always at their heart, a kyber crystal was." - Yoda

These crystals were very rare and were the embodiment of the force in nature. They grew on scattered planets all across the vast galaxy and are of course used at the heart of every single Lightsaber. The first time a Jedi comes across this rare crystal is when, as part of Jedi training, a youngling is sent to the crystal caves of the ice planet of Ilum. They are sent to harvest the crystal and then construct their very own Lightsaber.

Yoda's Lightsaber

Like many Jedi did for hundreds of years, Yoda built his lightsaber under the aegis of Professor Huyang, an architect droid who had been with the Jedi since its nascent days.

The lightsaber was put to good use in the movies, when on Geonosis, Yoda was forced to confront his former apprentice Darth Tyranus whilst the first battle of the Clone Wars began right outside. This was also where one of the coolest Saber battles ever occurs.

In the three years of the Clone Wars, the green-bladed saber served its master well on multiple occasions which are all present in the clone wars series, which gaps the space between movies 2 and 3, However, Yoda eventually lost his weapon when he dueled the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious in the Senate Building. When Sidious unleashes bolts of energy to disarm him, Yoda drops his Lightsaber, which falls to the ground below. Were not sure if he ever managed to get it back but its more likely that Sidious claimed it as a sort of victory trophy.

Yoda's saber is shorter than most on both the hilt and the blade, in keeping with his appearance. Apart from this it is a very standard Lightsaber.

Mace Windu's Lightsaber

Mace Windu's lightsaber was the second lightsaber built and wielded by Jedi Master Mace Windu after being appointed a senior member of the Jedi High Council.

Windu crafted his second lightsaber after many years of experience and used the highest standards to make a superior weapon. Its electrum finish indicated his status as a senior member of the Jedi Council and it also featured a specially designed hand-grip.

After the traumatic scene where we are faces with Windo's death all we know is that the weapon fell into the streets of Coruscant far below and was presumably destroyed upon landing. However it could have been salvaged and kept by anyone below.

But why is it purple? Well I was going to spurt out nonscene about rare crystals and how amazing Mace is, but instead I will just share this with you;

"We had this big arena, this fight scene with all these Jedi and they’re fightin’ or whatever. And I was like, well s---, I wanna be able to find myself in this big ol’ scene. So I said to George, "You think maybe I can get a purple lightsaber?"

There you have it, Samuel just wanted to be able to see himself on screen. What a bad mother f*****

Count Dooku's Lightsaber

Sometime before the Clone Wars, Count Dooku of Serenno handcrafted a lightsaber with the intent of using it in combat against his foes. Dooku used a Kyber crystal for the Lightsaber which generated a red-colored blade.Traditionally, red was the color used by the Sith to express their intensive dark side view of the the Force.

See the thing is, Count Dooku wasn't really bad. Well at least, that's not what I thought. But I think that's for another article later in the week.

In his final bout, Dooku lost his Sith lightsaber to the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker once he was defeated in a duel aboard the starship, Invisible Hand. Skywalker then used Dooku's own weapon to behead the Sith Lord and end his life and the sabers current whereabouts are unknown.

Obi-Wans Lightsaber's

Obi-Wan favored three Lightsabers during his time alive.

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi's first Lightsaber was a weapon that he built as a Padawan and wielded up until it was destroyed by Darth Maul in 32 BBY.
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi's second Lightsaber was a rebuild of his original design that he wielded as a Jedi Knight up until the outbreak of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY.
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi's third Lightsaber is his new weapon that he fabricated during the Clone war upon his promotion to Jedi Master and wielded up until his death.

"You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi to Darth Vader

The final Lighstaber was said to have passed onto Anakin Solo but that not being Cannon anymore I would say that this relic was left on Darth Vaders personal retreat on Vjin. If it was ever recovered by Luke after the war then it might be still in his possession but its more likely that it was lost.

"What is it?"

"It's your father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age."

―Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi

That's the end of the first part of this series. If you want to know more about the Lightsabers in the Star Wars universe check back soon for the second part with even more facts and a special look at Kylo Ren, the Emperor and Darth Maul's lightsabers.
