Truly there's no emotion more poignant than regret, which is how many Star Wars fans feel about the prequel trilogy. Unfortunately the trio of movies could have been better, but this was due to multiple elements, including: script, casting, directing and well... just some poor choices all round.
Unfortunately for one actor, Hayden Christensen, the failure of the prequel trilogy is often unfairly assigned to him. But would the Star Wars movies have been any better with a different actor playing the Skywalker role? Simply -- no: its flaws originate behind the camera. Anyway, the prequels actually aren't too bad if you watch them without constantly pining for the Original Star Wars Trilogy.
But let's delve into the realms of speculation, which I know you all love so much! Yes, as I so indiscreetly revealed above, the role of Anakin Skywalker was almost in the hands of veteran actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Of course we're referring to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith: I'm not implying DiCaprio wouldn't have been good in The Phantom Menace, simply that if Qui Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) entered Watto's shop and found a twenty-something year old DiCaprio playing the role of a 10 year old... well, actually that sounds pretty awesome.
So, why didn't Leonardo DiCaprio play a young Jedi Knight teetering on the edge of the Dark Side? Well apparently DiCaprio declined the role, believing that he just wasn't ready to take on Star Wars.
In an interview with Shortlist, DiCaprio discusses, among other things, his almost-role in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, stating:
"I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that as well, yes." [...] "Again, just didn’t feel ready to take that dive. At that point."
In short, we missed the chance of seeing Leo DiCaprio's fall to the Dark Side, which I'm sure would have been spectacular. But would it have changed the reception of the prequel movies? Probably not: as I've said, the movies had issues beyond casting, but still -- it would have good seeing DiCaprio donning Jedi robes and getting his force on.
Also, who wouldn't like to see Obi Wan clinging onto DiCaprio who's hanging over the edge of a volcano: "I'll never let go, Ani!"
Leonardo DiCaprio's latest movie, the highly anticipated Revenant, is in movie theaters now. Check out the incredible trailer below!
Do you think Leonardo DiCaprio would have made a great Anakin Skywalker? (Let me know in the comments!)
