As a dedicated Star Wars fan I was very excited to see The Force Awakens. But after watching this movie two times I'm gonna have to say that I am very disappointed in J.J Abrams. The movie started off great! A group of storm troopers are attacking a small town looking for a map that would lead them to Luke Skywalker. In my brain I was thinking, " awesome the bad guys are gonna find Luke and it will go from there". But the similarities to a New Hope began. A pilot named Poe Dameran has a droid named bb-8 and Poe gave the map to BB-8 that leads to Luke Skywalker. He told the droid to run away and get the map back to the resistance and thats when Kylo Ren shows up. Hmmmm! Sorta how Darth Vader shows up in a New Hope. I really do have to say that I enjoyed Kylo Ren a lot but he was so similar to Vader it was almost repeating plots. After these events the movie moves forward to Jakku which is a desert planet and is basically Tatooine and Rey is basically Luke Skywalker. A big difference that I see between Luke, and Rey is that Rey wanted to stay on Jakku and Luke wanted to leave Tatooine from the beginning of A New Hope. This movie did contain a lot of action it moved along very well. Adam Driver gave us a great performance as Kylo Ren. But if you are a fan of the Star Wars expanded universe you know that this movie is highly inaccurate. In the movie it is revealed that Kylo Ren is Han solo's son and his real name is Ben Solo. For me this really changed my view on the movie, in the star wars expanded series Han and Leia have 3 kids Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin. There is no reason that they should have named him Ben because one Luke was more attached to him and Han and Leia really didn't know him well besides knowing he was a Jedi. That is why in the Expanded universe Luke names his son Ben after Ben kenobi. This was a big insult to me that Kylo Ren was named Ben because J.J Abrams was completely ignorant to the New Jedi Order series.
In the final Battle of the Force awakens Rey who is somehow mastering her force powers extremely quickly destroys Kylo Ren in their lightsaber duel. Which in my opinion was not much of a duel at all. Before the duel Kylo Ren had just Killed Han Solo and was shot by the grieving Chewbacca. But earlier in the movie we saw Ren stop a blaster bolt in mid air so why not do that here? And if Ren was so powerful how did he get demolished by a lady who isn't even equal to a jedi padawan. This is a big flaw to the plot making f Kylo Ren seem so powerful and making him fall just really didn't sit right with me. Personally I think what should have happened is Rey, and Finn should have been demolished by Kylo Ren and Luke should have showed up and saved the day.
Another thing I hated about this movie is the repeat of the Death Star. You would think if you were trying to conquer the Galaxy yes the Death Star should work. But after it not working twice why bring it back? This was definitely Abrams playing it safe and just repeating a plot and switching some things up. And why would you give such a power weapon such an obvious weakness it just doesn't make sense in my brain.
Toward the end of the movie after Kylo Ren had been defeated and I was like okay where are they gonna take the movie from here? Luke Still didn't show up. They have told us the map bb-8 had was incomplete and then boom randomly R2-D2 shows up even though he is supposed to be in low power mode and not able to turn on. But just randomly he has the piece to the map. And after that Rey takes a nice journey and finds Luke. Well it seems to me that Abrams just wanted to take the easy way out.
So my favorite part of this movie, yes was bb-8. He was amazing rolling around like a droid on a misson and he just really kept me in the theater. His personalty was much different from Artoo and he brought a great presence to the movie. I would love to have this droid and thats all I have to say about him.
