Podcasting is an entertainment and communications medium that is just beginning to show its potential, even though it’s been around for over a decade. There are hundreds of thousands of podcasts available, in almost every conceivable genre and style. It comes as no surprise that sizable slice of them deal with movies, but attempting to find your new favorite show can be a challenge.

This is a list of podcasts that feature knowledgable and passionate hosts who provide information and insights about both what goes on behind the camera, and what makes it onscreen. They examine the merits & shortcomings of story, character and production, and the cultural impact of the movies in question.

Some shows are narrowly focused, while others cast wider nets–but the aspects that they all have in common are what make these shows some of the best movie-oriented podcasts around.

1. Wham Bam Pow

Wham Bam Pow is a podcast hosted by comedians Cameron Esposito, Rhea Butcher, Ricky Carmona that focuses primarily on Action and Sci-Fi movies. Though they are no longer recording new episodes, there are 112 in the archive for your listening pleasure. Cameron, Rhea & Ricky are hilarious and opinionated and thoughtful, and they might just make you think harder about your favorite movies.

2. Out of the Blue

David Blue is one of an increasing number of professional multi-hyphenates, as an actor, writer, director, producer, acting coach, and podcaster. On this show, David invites some friends on to talk about their careers and their interests. Out of the Blue is a fun and enlightening peek behind the curtain for the uninitiated, with conversations about auditioning, production & development, and what life is really like for the journeyman performers who may not get their face on a billboard in Times Square.

3. Making It with Riki Lindhome

This podcast is an essential resource for understanding how people achieve success in the entertainment industry, which unfortunately is not currently releasing new episodes. Making It explores topics like productivity & motivation, the heart-wrenching roller-coaster of the audition process, and how most people in the entertainment industry don't make as much money as you think. Riki is a writer, actress, and musician with an easy-going hosting style, and her podcast is a really fun way to spend an hour & change listening to talented creative people discuss their passions.

4. James Bonding

James Bonding hosts Matt Mira and Matt Gourley are superlative James Bond fans. They not only watch the movies, they know all of the various trivia, from the cars and the clothes, to the villains and the henchmen, to the gadgets and the “Bond Girls.” Matt & Matt expound on the triumphs and the flaws of this 53-year-old franchise, usually with guests who also have a lot to say about the adventures of 007.

5. I Was There Too

This is a podcast that highlights actors who played smaller roles in the great moments in cinema history. Host Matt Gourley has so far explored films like Alien, Total Recall, The Untouchables, and Speed. The guests on I Was There Too always provide valuable insights into the process of being a supporting player or a featured extra–as opposed to the names on the marquee who usually get all the attention.

6. How Did This Get Made?

Paul Sheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas ask this penultimate question of some of the most inexplicable movies in film history. The hosts and their guests take a good-natured approach to examining films that won’t be winning any Oscars–in fact their subjects are more typically Razzie contenders. This podcast is breathlessly hilarious, and will cause you to enjoy your guilty pleasures on a whole new way.

7. Comedy Film Nerds

Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini recently celebrated the 300th episode of their podcast, which has developed a global following because of its hosts’ passion and forthrightness. Chris and Graham are comedians, filmmakers, LA Podfest founders, and firm believers in the principle that Han Shot First. The CFN podcast is at the center of an online community of fans and fellow podcasters which will be featured in the upcoming documentary Ear Buds coming in 2016.
