2016 is the year of the comic book. Last year in 2015, we received 4 comic book movies, so we're doubling up with 8 films from Marvel, Fox, DC, and Paramount putting out some comic book movies, (not even mentioning Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pixar, and more) and some will be better than others. In 2015, we had a pretty good year with 3 amazing but one crappy comic book film. [Kingsman: The Secret Service](tag:713143) was released in theaters almost a year ago now and it was a huge surprise and was one of my favorites of the year. The sequel to what people may say is the best comic book movie of all time, [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035) was released in May. It was an overhyped movie and had a lot to live up to, therefore it resulted in the film getting a lot of crap. In reality, it was a really good and fun film. It stands in the top 5 of the MCU at least, if not higher. In July, we had a big surprise, or shall I say small, Ant-Man. Since Marvel made the movie, I had some faith going into the film, but it was just absolutely hilarious and action-packed being one of the best origin stories of the genre and one of the best solo films in the MCU. Last and definitely least was Fant4stic. Multiple things contributed to the epic fail of an attempt to reboot a franchise such as Fox coming in and taking away the main set pieces resulting in a lot of cut out scenes making one of the choppiest films I have ever seen. The only thing this movie did was enlighten our imaginations to see the Fantastic Four being made by Marvel and letting our favorite family into the universe. Therefore, after the Fantastic Flop, it got us a lot closer to see the Hulk vs. the Thing.
That was the year 2015. The big question is what will these next 8 comic book movies have in hold for us? Let's see my predictions from everything we have seen.
1. Deadpool (February 12th)
After one of the worst incarnations of a comic book character which was Deadpool in X-Men: Origins, (I mean, they sowed his mouth closed!) we are about to get one of the best incarnations of a comic book character ripped right out of a Deadpool comic! We have seen a couple of trailers and some brilliantly-hilarious advertising and people are hooked on this film. I have a few friends who really don't care about comic books and didn't even know who Deadpool was and are looking forward for this film. Fox made a difficult decision in rating the movie R-rated rather than PG-13. This means they actually care about the character as Deadpool is extremely R-rated. Making a Deadpool movie PG-13 would be solely for some cash. It will be hard to make a good amount of profit since you cut out kids up to 14 or 15 years old but I think so many adults are going to go out and see this movie over and over because it looks hilarious. I want to see this movie so bad and it seems like we are getting a close to perfect Deadpool movie. I thought The Force Awakens marketing was strong but man, this is some perfect marketing. Every time they release a picture, I begin to crap my pants once more. This movie is not only going to meet but it will exceed expectations. I have a lot of hope for Deadpool. The best part is, it comes out in almost a month!
2. Batman vs Superman (March 25th)
This one is going to be controversial. The trailer I showed above was the first one, which was great. After the second one, I have become less and less positive that this will be a great film and I have grown scared. I can easily see this movie making a lot of money, no matter how good or bad the film is received. I see Batman vs Superman having a lot of great action scenes but overall the movie will be like Man of Steel and have a split reception. Some fans will love the movie but others will find a lot of flaws in the film. I think it will be a good film but not an Avengers.
3. Captain America: Civil War (May 6th)
This is my most anticipated film on this list for a damn good reason. First off, this movie will be finishing the Captain America trilogy, which is probably the best trilogy (minus Avengers) having two great films following: Captain America: The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier. Also, this movie is raising the stakes. We get to see all the Avengers, old and new, split up into two teams and battle it out. We get to see the reunion of Steve and Bucky and Tony and Steve will have that tension we have seen explode. This is why I think [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) will be a better film than Batman v Superman because this movie has 12 films leading up to this event as all these characters (minus the new ones) have been highly developed already. They knew about Captain America: Civil War since the beginning when The Avengers came out; that tension between Tony and Steve made the movie. All these characters we have known, now we get to see them make a decision. With all of this, we get to see Black Panther and even better, Spider-Man join the MCU! I think there is a lot of controversy deciding which is the best MCU film but this will be a good contender which I do believe it will be.
4. X-Men Apocalypse (May 27th)
This movie takes place after the convergence after Days of Future's Past and already from looking at that picture for the trailer, it's not going to be amazing. Apocalypse has one of the biggest bad-ass looks in the Marvel universe and we get a Power Ranger. Overall, the movie will most likely not be as good as DOFP but it seems all too confusing in the X-Men universe with all their ideas. Plus, they are trying to introduce multiple new mutants in one movie, and we all know how trying to introduce multiple new characters goes in comic book movies... but overall, this movie will probably not be that well received or possibly a split decision.
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (June 3rd)
I would technically call this a comic book movie, so I'm putting this on the list along with the reason plainly for me to explain why this movie is going to SUCK! This movie may have Stephen Amell, but nothing is going to save this movie. The first one was decent if your generous, and this second one just looks like a typical Michael Bay film. This turtles franchise, if it continues to make cash, will turn into the Transformers franchise, and they will get worse and worse, oh, and worse. Therefore, this is going to be the sh*tty blockbuster this summer.
6. Suicide Squad (August 5th)
This will be the first DCEU film to be excellent and please a majority of fans. Personally, I love DC but I do not see this DC cinematic universe going far with many potential flaws, but this movie looks pretty good! Everyone, including me was skeptical about the Joker, but his look makes sense. This is not the 'golden-age' Joker but after years and years of fighting Batman. For example, his teeth; a lot of them fell out. The rest of the squad looks pretty cool. I especially love the look of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc. Overall this will be a great movie, but most likely no Guardians of the Galaxy will it be.
7. Gambit (October 7th)
We don't even have a trailer, official anything even for this movie besides what I think is a great casting of Channing Tatum. As the film comes out in 10 months, it's weird how we haven't seen anything. There were some (rumored) problems on set which makes me believe this film will be delayed, I'm calling this now. So, overall I'm not even sure we'll see this film this year and we'll have to wait until 2017.
8. Doctor Strange (November 4th)
For this movie, we actually have some pictures (like above, it's official) and some details. It is going to be a very different kind of Marvel movie, because at this point they are all different. Anyways, it is going to be very mystical and will discover the other realms. Cumberbatch looks amazing as Steven Strange and I'm very excited for this film. Overall, this film is going to surprise us all, because hey, Marvel hasn't majorly failed us yet!
