WARNING: Potential spoilers ahead for 'The Walking Dead' TV and comic book. Cover yourself in walker guts and proceed with caution.
Ever since November 29th there's been a walker shaped hole in our lives, unable to be filled by anything other than The Walking Dead. But luckily for fans, AMC have released a short teaser trailer just in time to tide you over until the mid-season premiere hits screens on February 14th.
The trailer is very short, clocking in at just 29 seconds, and contains a lot of footage that we already saw in the mid-season finale last year. However, there is also some new stuff, and for that it's worth watching. Take a look at the whole trailer and then get a more in-depth look below:
Good, right?! Let's take a closer look.
First of all we launched straight into a scene we saw right at the end of the mid-season finale in 2015. Rick, Carl, Michonne, Father Gabriel, Sam, Ron and Jessie on the porch covered in walker guts ready to walk through the herd. Over the top of the footage we hear Rick saying:
"I thought living behind these walls was possible. I was wrong."
The footage shows the whole group on the porch, as well as close ups of Michonne, Carl and Rick. Interestingly it also chose to include the close up of Jessie holding hands with Carl -- more on that later.
The trailer then flashed back to Sasha, Abe and Daryl meeting up with Negan's men, the Saviors. The situation with the Saviors was pretty dire when Season 6a finished off, and with this scene being included in the teaser, it looks like we're going to see a lot more of this bad group in the mid-season premiere (though unfortunately it seems as though we'll have to wait until the season finale to meet their leader, Negan). While the scene is mostly what we saw at the very end of episode 8, we do catch a glimpse of Daryl handing over his gun.
Next up we see Rick and Michonne fighting back against the herd, without their guts-covered ponchos. Glenn also looks to have gotten inside the walls of the town and is firing at walkers -- probably in an attempt to get to his pregnant wife, Maggie.
From inside the walls of Alexandria the teaser flashes back to Negan's men, and despite the leader being back on his bike (perhaps indicating they were about to leave?), he seems to be pointing his newly acquired gun in the direction of Sasha and Abraham. Fan of the series will know that frequently after a character shows some sort of development, like the sort of development Abraham showed in episode 6, their death isn't too far away. Will Abe make it out of this roadside stand-off alive? Honestly, I'm not too sure he will (especially when he already looks like he's dressed to be buried).
Meanwhile at Alexandria, a guts-covered Rick and Carl seem startled by something, possibly the screams of nearby Maggie who was last spotted precariously balanced on a rickety looking platform. Maggie looks like she's just seen something pretty horrific, here's hoping it has nothing to do with Glenn (seriously, my heart couldn't take it after last years agony over Glenn's dumpster fate). We also see another shot of Rick (this time free from his guts poncho), with his axe out taking a swing at a walker.
Finally the teaser ends on two shots of Rick swinging at things with his axe. In the first shot Rick is in his white (or, formerly white) t-shirt, most probably swinging at a walker. However in the final shot, Rick is still dressed in his guts poncho and looks to be bringing the axe down with some heft. Now, this is where things might get spoiler-y, so look away quickly if you have eyes sensitive to such things...
A lot of people are speculating that Rick is swinging the axe down on Jessie's wrist. The theory is that after Sam's repeated cries of "mom" draws the attention of the walkers, he is eaten alive. Obviously Jessie is distraught at seeing this, and refuses to let go of her son, but she also won't let go of Carl, who is holding her other hand. In an effort to ensure his son doesn't meet the same fate as Sam (and later, Jessie), Rick severs Jessie's hand with his axe to free Carl. There's a whole lot more that is being theorized, and if you're interested in that then have a look over here, but basically it looks as though the trailer may have confirmed at least this one part of the theory.
So all in all, the latest trailer fromThe Walking Dead was short, but very very sweet. The choice of material suggests that the mid-season premiere will pick off exactly where it left off with the gang on the porch in Alexandria (though there was no mention of Dr. Denise, the Wolf, Morgan, Tara, Eugene or Rosita), and will also include a bit of time sorting out the showdown on the road. In my opinion, it might be the end for a few characters in episode 9, including Sam, Jessie and possibly even Abraham, though of course time will tell if that comes to pass or not. Bring on Valentine's Day!
