With welcoming in the new year we also get a whole smorgasbord of new TV shows hitting screens, ready to be devoured by our eager eyes. One such show is the upcoming MTV series The Shannara Chronicles which premieres tonight (January 5).

The fantasy series is based on the Shannara series written by Terry Brooks, and is set in a far off future where technology has died out and magic is real, but has also started to die out. As with any good fantasy series, you have your regular human characters, but also elves, trolls and druids -- in fact the elves have the power in this world, with humans being second-class citizens. There are also evil demons in this world, however they are locked away with a magical tree, Ellcrys. Unfortunately as the tree starts to die, the world is in danger of being filled with these demons. Elf, Amberle Elessedil has the power to save the tree and undertakes the task with the help of friend Wil Ohmsford.

The Shannara Chronicles has quite a large cast of characters, but luckily MTV have given us a good run down of who we should keep our eyes out for on screen. Take a look at the cast and characters of your new favorite fantasy TV series, The Shannara Chronicles.

Amberle (Poppy Drayton)

Poppy Drayton takes on a lead role as Amberle, an Elven Princess and the very first female to "be accepted as one of the Chosen, the elite group of elves responsible for the protection and care of the ancient Ellcrys tree." In The Shannara Chronicles Amberle is forced to undergo a journey to far-off Bloodfire to plant a seed and save the magical Ellcrys tree, which is the only thing holding back the evil demons.

Wil Ohmsford (Austin Butler)

The Carrie Diaries actor Austin Butler will play Wil Ohmsford, a half-human, half-elf who helps Amberle on her journey. Not far into his mission with Amberle, Wil learns that he is actually the last of the "legendary Shannara family," and he must locate the Druid, Allanon who will "guide him to his destiny."

Eretria (Ivana Baquero)

Pan's Labyrinth star Ivana Baquero will play the human thief Eretria in the series. Eretria was raised by a group of thieves called the Rovers, and is no stranger to having to use both her brains and beauty to survive. Throughout the series she forms a bond with Wil as he and Amberle continue their quest.

Allanon (Manu Bennett)

The Hobbit actor Manu Bennett is playing the Druid, Allanon, who enlists the help of Wil, the last in the line of the Shannara family, after realizing that the Ellcrys tree is dying.

King Eventine (John Rhys-Davies)

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit actor Jon Rhys-Davies is no stranger to the fantasy genre, and will be playing King Eventine in The Shannara Chronicles. King Eventine is the grandfather of Amberle (Poppy Drayton), and has ruled the Elvin kingdom of Arborlon for decades, along with his children Arion (Daniel MacPherson) and Ander (Aaron Jakubenko).
