Revenant, meaning a person whom has returned, after the person was thought to be deceased. This haunting meaning is perfect for this type of film; haunting, raw, and extreme are the only words that I can come up with for this film. The story is about a man named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man employed by the fur-trade in the 1820's, whom is mauled by a bear and is on the edge of life and death. The men who are with Glass are torn between taking him with them, or leaving a few men with him until he either recovers or dies. Three men volunteer to stay with Glass, including his son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), and Jim Bridger (Will Poulter). Not long after being left with Glass, Fitzgerald tries to kill Glass, but the attempt is interrupted by Hawk, who dies trying to protect his father. Glass is than left for dead by both Fitzgerald and Bridger, but unknownst to them Glass is willing to do anything to survive for revenge. Once thing I heard before seeing the film was that this was DiCaprio's hardest film to make, and after watching it I can see why, and I must I'm truly impressed. The acting on DiCaprio's part was truly breathtaking, and it was only made more so because he had very little dialogue throughout the film. DiCaprio had to make his performance out of action, exposure and facial expressions. Dialogue is sometimes needed to enhance a performance, but DiCaprio proves it wasn't required for this Oscar worthy performance. The cinematography in the film only added to the haunting effect and hardship of the journey Glass was on, which leaves the audience with a strong feeling of empathy for the character. The background was beautiful, but unforgiving like most things in nature, very much like the events that happened to Glass. Truly a beautifully done film, I would recommend this to extreme film buffs like myself, or any Leonardo DiCaprio fan.
