Without a doubt, Ashley Benson has come a long way since her first forays into acting at the age of 14 on Days of Our Lives, and for many, it seems that the Pretty Little Liars actress has really got it made in the industry — after all, she's beautiful, successful and intelligent. Here she is in her younger years before she made it huge:
Yet, as it turns out, despite being an all-round wonderful human, she's been no stranger to receiving the odd criticism along the way — shockingly, especially when it comes to her weight! And it seems that Ashley has finally had enough.
Speaking to Ocean Drive Magazine, Benson actually caused quite a stir the other day by admitting that she was recently told she was "too fat" when getting rejected for a role.
Naturally, like most girls, she was upset by such a harsh attack, candidly confessing:
“I’m a size 2! I cried for 30 minutes."
However, she soon picked herself up, revealing her choice to deal with the unpleasant situation head-on:
"You have to let it roll off your shoulders or it could cause a serious eating disorder."
With this, the 26-year-old entered once again into the age old debate regarding weight issues within the entertainment industry.
"It does make you stronger"
And while criticizing the ways in which actors and actresses are pressured to be thin, Benson took it a step further by pulling a positive out of working in such a cut-throat environment, saying:
“A lot of people in this industry hear they need to lose weight more times than they should. It does make you stronger, though. Because if you let that affect you, you can’t be in this industry — you’d go crazy.”
This is not the first time that Ashley has commented on Hollywood's skewed idea of healthy body image and during her interview, the actress also touched on her opinions on air-brushing. She admitted:
“I saw photos from a shoot of myself just the other day and thought, What the hell? That doesn’t even look like me! I was so disappointed. I hate to think that girls are like, ‘She’s so skinny! Her skin is so perfect!’ I have pimples just like they do.”
In fact, a few years ago, she posted a retouched poster for Pretty Little Liars she had come across and pointed out how ridiculous it looked:
The caption read:
"Our faces in this were from 4 years ago.....and we all look ridiculous. Way too much photo shop. We all have flaws. No one looks like this. It's not attractive."
Body shaming is never acceptable and Ashley's words highlight an ongoing problem in Hollywood. Yet, her insistence that she's far from perfect continues to console and empower young women everywhere, making her one of the best role-models around!
Keep speaking out and doing your thing, girl!
