The first of three Star Wars Anthology films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hits cinemas in December of this year, but there is little we know of the film, other than the fact that it takes place between the events of Episodes III & IV, and follows a group of Rebels that set out to steal the plans to the Death Star. Felicity Jones has been cast in the lead role, and we may have just discovered her character's name...
Or have we?
News has just recently broke, of a casting site containing information regarding an actress by the name of Gabrielle Fritz. Fritz is listed as being the picture double for the character of Lyra Erso. It has been widely assumed that this means Fritz is the picture double for Felicity Jones, therefore her character name must be Lyra Erso, and many news outlets are reporting this as being the case, but I'm not entirely convinced it's as simple as that. While it's completely plausible this is the name of Felicity Jones' character, it could just as easily prove to be wrong, so I wanted to share a theory of mine with you, that Felicity Jones is in fact playing the mother of The Force Awakens hero, Poe Dameron.
If you're having trouble believing me, I urge you to stay with me. Now I haven't just made up the idea of Poe Dameron's mother and what I'd imagine her to be like, she is in fact an existing character in the Star Wars Universe, and is non other than a Starfighter Pilot who served as a Lieutenant in the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Poe's mother goes by the name Shara Bey and appears in the Marvel comic book mini-series Star Wars: Shattered Empire, which follows her exploits as a Rebel pilot during the Galactic Civil war.
Shara Bey was an incredibly gifted pilot and her valiant efforts were recognized by the Republic, with her receiving numerous medals, and played a key part in the Battle of Endor featured during the events of Episode VI, leading to her becoming Princess Leia's personal pilot. A similarity shared with Poe Dameron, whom we learn from The Force Awakens is an incredibly talented pilot and one held in extremely high regard by the newly titled General Leia herself.
But where does Felicity Jones fit into this?
Felicity Jones bares a striking resemblance to the comic book depiction of Shara Bey, who is described on Wookieepedia as being a human female with black hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Felicity Jones ticks all of them boxes and also fits the correct age criteria, with Shara being around 30 years of age and Felicity being 32 years old herself. It makes sense that a pilot of Shara's age and ability would be involved in an attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star, so it isn't too far-fetched to deuce from this that Felicity Jones is playing Shara.
We know that Rogue One centers around a female rebel pilot, so it's very plausible that Shara Bey is the character they chose to use. With Disney trying to build their own canon of stories to accompany the films, it would be beneficial for them to use a character from an existing comic book, as it adds to the stature of the canon stories, and may get audiences more involved in the comics and novels being made by Disney, as opposed to just watching the films and not investing in any additional material. Having the film center around Poe Dameron's mother is also a clever way of connecting this particular anthology film to the hugely successful The Force Awakens, which again can only be a good thing as far as Disney, and audiences, are concerned.
Having Felicity Jones play Poe's mother would also be very convenient, as Shara Bey died six years after the Battle of Endor, which would explain why such a talented pilot, and mother of one of our heroes, isn't around thirty years later when Episode VII comes round.
It is also worth noting that Shara Bey has comes across many of our beloved heroes in her time, including Princess Leia, Han Solo, and even Luke Skywalker. She in fact went on a mission with Luke, accompanying him to the planet Vetine as he searched for the last remaining Force-sensitive tree that once grew in the Jedi Temple, and was being protected by The Emperor before his demise. On their mission they discovered two fragments, one of which Luke entrusted to Shara. Shara planted this tree at her home on Yavin 4, and in the comic Star Wars: Shattered Empire, a young Poe can be seen playing in the shadow of this Force-sensitive tree... does this mean Poe Dameron is also Force-sensitive?
What do you think, is there a chance Felicity Jones could be playing Shara Bey, the mother of Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron from The Force Awakens? Or do you believe her character will turn out to be Lyra Erso, as reported?
