Now that 2015 has finally come to an end, it's time to give my personal Top 10 Most anticipated movies for 2016. The majority of these movies may be a bit different because last year we got a bunch of sequels (book-to-film, superheroes, super spies) and some really cliche original ideas (comical superhero movie). This year may be no different. But the movie line up here looks really good. So without any further ado, let's go over my Top 10 Most anticipated movies of 2016.
10. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Now every one of you know what happens after Return of the Jedi by now. But one question that gets me is: What happened in-between the original timeline? Well, ironically, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to take place in-between episodes III and IV. It will supposedly tell the story of how some of the rebels obtained the Death Star plans that were given to Princess Leia at the beginning of Episode IV. This features an all-star cast that is headed by Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen which sounds as ironic as it is, a pretty good in-between story set in the famous galaxy far, far away.
Taking spot #9 is the newest addition to the Disney canon, Zootopia. When I saw the first trailer for this movie, I thought to myself, 'Wow, this has to be one of Disney's best ideas in a long time'. To have a world inhabited by animals as people sounds really original. Not based off some fairy tale or superhero. But to have something as original as Zootopia sounds so much fun. Can't wait to see what happens when it debuts in just a few short weeks.
Now I haven't been too kind to many movies based on an already-popular franchise. But Warcraft already looks like it will be really good. It will tell the origin story of how the Alliance and the Orcs collided forces to face a common enemy. This sounds like a pretty cliche plot to have two factions meet up with each other. Sure hope this movie plays out good. I haven't played the World of Warcraft games. But I hear this movie could either be really good or really bad. Who knows?
7. Independence Day: Resurgence
Taking the seventh place in this list is one movie that has been asked about for many a year Independence Day: Resurgence. I haven't seen the original Independence Day movie. But I hear it is really good with a huge mother-ship flying over a city and it was pretty shocking to see the White House get destroyed in that one clip. Jeff Goldblum will return to star and Roland Emmerich (White House Down; 2012) will return to direct the film. Sure hope this plays as well as the original did so many years ago.
6. X-Men Apocalypse
Taking spot #6 is one movie that brings everything full circle in the X-Men franchise X-Men Apocalypse!!! This is the next big thing in the X-Men movie universe. Apocalypse is finally coming in to be the main villain. Saw the trailer and it looked really great. Loved the previous film Days of Future Past which totally blew me away and met all my expectations. I believe that Apocalypse will be even bigger and better than all the previous films in the X-Men movie franchise to date. The film will star the return of James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne and star some fresh new faces who will replace some of our favorite actors who have played characters such as Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). The film's villain Apocalypse will be played by Oscar Isaac of The Force Awakens fame. So be sure to look for these fresh new faces when it hits.
5. Doctor Strange
Now this year is set to bring in a bunch of favorite and new superheroes onto the silver screen. And #5 is no different. Taking spot #5 is the Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange. Set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie will tell the story of Stephen Strange, a brilliant neurosurgeon who gets into a car accident that destroys his hands. Afterwards, he ventures on a frantic journey to heal his hands which results in some very unique changes, one of which he meets a figure called the Ancient One. The film will be directed by Scott Derrickson and star Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character along with Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams. Seems that the MCU is finally getting the supernatural works into their system. Super excited for this.
4. Finding Dory
Taking spot #4 is one movie that has been begged for such a long time from Pixar: Finding Dory. And I gotta say, it has been such a long time since Finding Nemo, which is one of my all-time favorite Pixar movies ever. The film will be centered around Dory (voiced once again by Ellen DeGeneres), as she ventures on a quest to rediscover her roots and where she came from as she reunites with her family along with Marlin and Nemo. It will take place a few months after the events of Finding Nemo and will be directed by Andrew Stanton who directed Nemo. This sounds like it will be a lot of fun to return under the sea with our fish friends.
3. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
Taking spot #3 is another superhero flick but features the first time ever we see these iconic heroes on the big screen: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This is obviously a set-up for what we can expect a Justice League movie. It will be set in the same universe as Man of Steel is and will tell how Batman confronts Superman, who nearly destroyed Metropolis while fighting off General Zod in the previous film. But they must also try to work together as they contend with Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman (finally). The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and will star Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. This may be some competition with Marvel since DC is finally catching up. Hmmm. I don't know. But I am so looking forward to this one.
2. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Taking spot #2 is another prequel movie set before one of the best film series of all time: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It has been quite a few years since Harry Potter closed out with Deathly Hallows Part 2. And now, we are finally returning to the Wizarding World with a brand new story set approximately 70 years before the events of Sorcerer's Stone. The film will be directed by David Yates (director of the final four Potter films) and will star a whole new cast that features Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, Jupiter Ascending), Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Pacific Rim), Colin Farrell and newcomers Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Erza Miller. The film itself is set to be the first part of a prequel trilogy to the Harry Potter story. So be prepared for that.
1. Captain America: Civil War
And yes. This is it. My most anticipated movie for 2016 is none other than Captain America: Civil War!!! Set directly after the shocking events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, another international incident brings the Avengers into two different factions: one led by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and the other led by Captain America (Chris Evans). This movie looks like it will bring the MCU up a notch as Phase 3 finally kicks off in May. The film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and will feature the return of other fan favorites such as Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Frank Grillo, Emily van Camp, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, William Hurt, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner. New cast members will include Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl as Baron Helmut Zemo and Martin Freeman as a yet-to-be-known character.
