Well, we were all sitting here thinking that we wouldn't receive any more clues as to the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke from Star Wars: The Force Awakens until 2017, when Star Wars: Episode 8 lands. The internet has run rampant with ideas of his identity. These range from the insane and the stupid all the way to the slightly plausible and merely unlikely. No, there really aren't any that seem foolproof. But isn't that the fun of guessing?
The most popular theory by far is that Snoke may be Darth Plageuis, the Sith Lord who taught Emperor Palpatine the ways of the dark side. If you really think about it, he's kind of like Darth Vader's Sith Grandfather... which is sort of weird. Anyway, the theory goes that, much like Palpatine explained to Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Darth Plageuis managed to conquer death and discover ways to live on past his apparent murder by Palpatine.
I've always had issues with this theory, although I admit I've thrown some of my own insane theories out there at different times, but now it is finally over. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Andy Serkis, who plays Supreme Leader Snoke, has revealed a big hint about Snoke's identity.
The interview, done in November, has been rupurposed by EW recently to say that Serkis told them there was no connection between the two characters. In an article, they state themselves that:
"Although there was much speculation about who Snoke might turn out to be (one popular theory was that he’d turn out to be a Sith Lord known from the prequels as Darth Plagueis) he actually turns out to be … just Snoke."
According to Entertainment Weekly, Serkis told them there is no connection, but Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to comment on the rumours; is it still possible? Let's look back at what Serkis himself said in the interview.
"Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,"
"Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose."
It certainly sounds quite different from what we know about Plageuis, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. However, personally, I am beginning to think that Snoke may just be Snoke.
