What is it about Japanese RPGs and beautiful music? Or just Japanese products in general? Movies, TV shows, animes; the music from Japan is generally spellbinding, and the Kingdom Hearts series is no exception. Thanks to the genius of Yoko Shimomura, the themes of the various worlds within this series are etched into our minds.
But perhaps the most captivating piece from the Kingdom Hearts franchise is the remarkable 'Dearly Beloved'. It's been covered countless times, re-performed for almost every Kingdom Hearts installment, and somehow remains a moving piece of music. We can't wait to see how the theme will sound in Kingdom Hearts 3, but does it have the power to triumph over some of the greatest themes from JRPG history?
Kingdom Hearts 3 & Dearly Beloved - Can It Better These Beautiful JRPG Themes?
Above you can bask in the beauty of Kyle Landry's rendition of 'Dearly Beloved', a theme that many would consider to be one of the greatest in the history of the art form. But can it compare with these beauties?
Ni No Kuni
This has to be one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. With the stunning animations of Studio Ghibli, the gameplay of Pokemon, a gripping and emotional story, and the music of the wondrous Joe Hisaishi underscoring it all, this truly is a modern masterpiece. And now we hear that Ni No Kuni 2 is on the horizon. Literally the best news ever. Let us know if you're a fan of Ni No Kuni in the comments!
- Suikoden II
Not only one of the best JRPGs of all time, but Suikoden II also features one of the genre's most lovable soundtracks. From its fantastic battle music to its heart-wrenching love themes, Suikoden II has it all. Seriously, anyone who has yet to engage with this masterpiece needs to get on it immediately!
Personally, I think that the opening theme of Xenoblade Chronicles has the power to rival Kingdom Hearts's 'Dearly Beloved'. And that's without mentioning its incredible battle music - which shines in Super Smash Bros. on theWii U by the way! But this theme does a remarkable job of setting the tone for this epic game: It's beautiful, moving, and adventurous.
The Legend of Zelda
Now this is epic. The 25th anniversary edition of The Legend of Zelda theme song sounds like something that John Williams would have composed. It perfectly depicts the epic nature of the various adventures we've been on as Link in The Legend of Zelda series. As one of the best themes in gaming, can Kingdom Hearts stand up to Kōji Kondō's masterpiece?
- Final Fantasy 7
Any great masterpiece needs to be accompanied by memorable music. The Final Fantasy series has a great reputation for exquisite music, but none more than Square Enix's crowning achievement, Final Fantasy 7. Do you enjoy 'Dearly Beloved' more than the main theme for Final Fantasy 7? Do any of these themes beat Yoko Shimomura's score? Does Kingdom Hearts 3 have what it takes?
