Where does Wolverine end, and where does Hugh Jackman begin? It's fair to assume the Australian actor probably doesn't have adamantium claws, but besides that, the 47-year-old is synonymous with the Marvel mutant.
His announcement that next year's Wolverine 3 will be his last as the character, after an impressive stint, was unsurprisingly met with disappointment by fans.
However, teasing Tweet has suggested the possibility he could return:
Pictured with the iconic metallic claw in the background and a puzzled expression, Jackman adds the caption '4?????'.
A Fourth Outing?
Although the insinuation of the number '4' is that there could be a fourth solo outing, there are other exciting possibilities of Jackman continuing in the role. For example, could Wolverine make an appearance in either of the two Marcel films released this year, X-Men: Apocalypse or Deadpool?
The former, the latest installment of the X-Men series where Jackman cut his mustard (amongst cutting other things), hasn't yet confirmed whether Wolverine will feature. Jackman also hasn't confirmed either way, and he hasn't been seen on set. Check out the trailer.
Jackman has played the role for 17 years, first appearing in X-Men (2000), with next years Wolverine being his, supposedly, last furore into Marvel's mutant world. He's appeared in seven movies as the character so far.
The Perfect Way to Go Out
Talking on the Dr Oz show in March this year, Jackman confirmed the appearance would be his last. He said:
"It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.
"I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out."
Whether Jackman does continue with a new solo venture as James "Logan" Howlett or not, he has certainly left his mark. And no, that's not just because of the claws.
Check out some of the best clips below:
1. 'X-Men 2' (2003) - Wolverine vs. Lady Death Strike
In Jackman's second stint as Wolverine, he faces a difficult challenge in this epic battle with Lady Death Strike.
2. 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006) - Wolverine Kills Phoenix
In 2006, Jackman faced Famke Janssen, playing Phoenix, a former member of the X-Men who possesses telekinetic powers.
3. 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (2009) - Wolverine v Deadpool
The Merc with the Mouth made a underwhelming cameo appearance in Jackman's first solo fare. However, this did pave the way for Ryan Reynolds to play the role in Deadpool's own feature.
Could Wolverine cameo on Deadpool? Hopefully.
4. 'X-Men: First Class' (2011) - "Go f*ck yourself"
When a young Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender) visit Wolverine in a bar, they are told in no uncertain terms that he is, lets say, uninterested.
5. 'The Wolverine' (2013)
This scene during Wolverine's second solo expedition features an enthralling duel aboard and above a Japanese bullet train.
It's obvious Jackman trained hard for the role...
