Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is my personal favorite show on TV right now. I totally understand if you don't understand this. It has to do with the fact that I just love Marvel. I'm sorry, I'm a big ol' Marvel nerd, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is Marvel's main TV offering at the moment. All of this isn't to say I don't understand that it started out flawed and not all of it's flaws have been fixed.
Still though, it was recently revealed that Agents of SHIELD is getting it's very own spin off series. The current name of the project is Marvel's Most Wanted and it's set to star Nick Blood and Adrianne Palicki as Lance Hunter and Bobby "Mockingbird" Morse. I'm all for that idea. Agent Morse is the coolest. The one problem I do have is that AoS is losing characters before it's buffed out it's own scratches and dents. For instance:
Its Lack of Heroes
Since season one, we've gotten to see Daisy "Quake" Johnson (like we all don't still call her Skye!) suit up and fight. The thing is, as far as Marvel heroes, all we've got lately is Mockingbird, Quake, and Coulson. I want more. Both heroes and villains, I want more.
Its Marvel Movie Tie-Ins
This show tries its best to tie-in to the MCU movies. The movies however, couldn't care less about anything or anyone involved with television. Over and over, Marvel has told us that they're connected, but the Avengers straight up didn't get the memo.
Its Lack of Balance
AoS was originally a procedural. Every episode had a different problem for Coulson's team to solve. I know, I know, this didn't work as well as the Whedons would have hoped, but this process did show S.H.I.E.L.D.'s expanse across the planet and also introduced new threats and villains. Now it's practically Marvel's: The Inhuman Soap Opera. I love Inhumans, but can't we have regular humans with powers sometimes? Does this have to be the "What Inhuman/Alien thing have we found today?" show? Aren't there other threats on earth Coulson? And before you answer, no it doesn't count that you built the helicarrier from Age of Ultron because you barely spent 10 minutes on it so you could go back to talking about Inhumans and Inhuman planets.
Ok, there are a few problems still lingering in Agents of SHIELD. Can they be fixed? Yes. Here's some ways to do so:
1) Add More Marvel
Marvel has so many minor characters to use. In fact, isn't Graviton in someone's basement somewhere? When and if he finally shows up, can he please not die after one episode? We need more villains than the half-season big bad. In a world of powers, there should be more than just Lash and "Worm Ward Inhuman Hydra Thing" to deal with each week. I want a big bad for Coulson and other threats for the rest of the Agents every week. Please? I just don't get why there were ever thousands of Agents across the globe when a handful of Agents could have handled the worlds problems the whole time.
2) Have Two-Way Tie-Ins or None At All
Ultron lifted an entire country into the air and hurled it towards earth to cause a mass extinction. What did "the shield to protect the earth" do? Coulson donated a used helicarrier and then went back to watching, discussing, and battling Inhumans. Coulson, if Ultron had won, everyone would've died, even the Inhumans! Doesn't that deserve a little more than a nod and a free used boat? Now, if Coulson or May or Bobby or even Koenig had been on that helicarrier bridge with Nick Fury, I wouldn't have any complaints. Heck, if Fury had said "An old friend sent us some help!" I'd be fine. But that didn't happen, so now I'm complaining on the internet. It is what it is.
3) Balance the Story of Each Episode
I already mentioned this, but it needs to be said. I love the story arcs AoS has been giving, but they get a little tired and slow considering they have to be stretched over 10-12 episodes. If the Agents had some minor threats to deal with along with Inhumans and Hydra, S.H.I.E.L.D. would feel like S.H.I.E.L.D. The world can't possibly be fresh out of 084s. I'm just saying.
AoS is great. If it never changes, I'll still watch. If Most Wanted is the same as S.H.I.E.L.D. I'll still watch it. Others, though, will not. Changes need to be made if S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to last until the next Avengers flick. Hopefully I'm writing this and Marvel's already got this fixed. But in case they don't, let's let them know what changes still need made.
