The Internet has been broken again, but this time it was thanks to an incredibly awkward moment between Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga at the Golden Globes (where he won the award for 'Best Actor').
In case you have been living under a rock and missed this rather amusing moment here is what happened: Gaga was headed to the stage to accept the award for 'Best Actress in a Limited Series' for her role on [American Horror Story: Hotel](tag:3561561). As she walked past DiCaprio, he appeared to be laughing and Mother Monster brushed into his back with her arm causing him to make one of the most meme worthy faces ever.
We're not sure why she "bumped" into him (who wouldn't at least try, right?) but DiCaprio did give an explanation for his hilarious reaction in an interview with ET stating,
“I just didn’t know what was passing me – that’s all!”
It appears that he was not intentionally throwing shade and a feud may be avoided, but it was still funny nonetheless. Now, let's take a look at some other awkward awards show moments.
5. Ricky Gervais vs. Johnny Depp
Funny man Ricky Gervais threw some shade at Johnny Depp at the 2011 Golden Globe awards - but then again, who hasn't he picked on? Gervais began throwing jabs and mocking Depp's film The Tourist on stage with Depp only a few feet away. It's probably for the best that Depp is a pretty mellow guy.
4. Steve McQueen vs. John Ridley
Steve McQueen and John Ridley are not each other's biggest fans, to say the very least. The two had a serious beef over screenwriting credits for 12 Years a Slave and their feud spilled over into the 2014 Oscars. As John Ridley was announced the winner for .Best Adapted Screenplay., McQueen threw more shade than a giant oak tree with a disgusted expression and a faux-clap. Neither men would even acknowledge one another in passing and would not mention the other in acceptance speeches.
3. Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West
Picking on Taylor Swift is like picking on a Care Bear, but that didn't stop Kanye West from storming the stage at the 2009 MTV VMAs during her acceptance speech. Swift was accepting the award for 'Best Female Video' when West decided that Beyonce should have won stating;
"Imma let you finish..." "Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. Of all time."
He later apologized, but little did he know he was already the inspiration for a new song ('Mean').
2. Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj are both very strong willed, outspoken women, so it was only a matter of time before they set their sights on one another. This is one sticky situation. Minaj entered into a Twitter smack down with Taylor Swift after she tweeted her frustration that her video 'Anaconda' was not nominated for the Video of the Year award.
Just a short time after Minaj's exchange with Swift, Miley gave an interview with the Times stating,
“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind,” she said. “It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you’ve just given E! News ’Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It.'”
Minaj took offense to what Cyrus had said about her and called her out while accepting the award for 'Best Hip Hop Video' at the 2015 MTV VMAs.
1. Elton John vs. Madonna
What can we expect from two such powerful artists? Elton John and Madonna are both as opinionated as they are talented, so it's only natural that they've been known to throw some shade at each other on occasion. At the 2011 Golden Globes (a big year for feuds) Elton was asked who he believed would take home the award for 'Best Original Song' and when Madonna's name came up he had this to say,
"She doesn't have a f***ing chance of winning."
She did end up winning the award and Elton John and his husband David Furnish refused to watch the Super Bowl halftime show since she would be performing.
These are only the tip of the iceberg that is celebrity feuds. With awards season getting into swing, I'm sure there will be enough shade cast to keep Hollywood nice and cool for some time to come.
