Before the start of season 2 of Star Wars: Rebels, Dave Filoni, executive producer of the show teased that they would bringing another major character from the films onto the animated series. TV Insider revealed that they will bringing forth Princess Leia a.k.a General Organa in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Princess Leia will be making her debut on the animated series on January 20, 2016. The episode is set prior to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, just when the Galactic Empire began their ruthless oppression. Leia is sent to Lothal on a secret mission to bring ships for the rebel fleet but an Imperial lockdown throw the mission into utter chaos.

Filoni wanted to show teenage Leia learning what it is like to become an extraordinary leader and how she became the character she is in A New Hope.

“We thought we had an opportunity to show her learning to be a leader, experimenting with the personality that becomes the stronger more resolute character you see in A New Hope. One of the complex challenges of depicting Leia in Rebels is that we have to remind the audience that at this point she is part of the Empire. She doesn’t believe in the Empire, but she is acting the part, almost a double agent.”

Leia will only being appearing in this episode, it is unknown if she will continue appear in more episodes of the series. The iconic character will also be voiced by Julie Dolan, who also plays Leia in the video game, Star Wars: Uprising.

The episode "A Princess in Lothal" will air January 20 on Disney XD.
