One of the main issues with The Creative Assembly's latest installment in the adored Total War franchise, is that the Warhammer IP has been protected. What this means is that it'll be the first in the series to omit the availability of mod support. Sucks. Some of the best fun I've had with the Total War series can be attributed to mods.

But while we're focusing on [Total War: Warhammer](tag:3627632) and whether The Creative Assembly can dazzle us once again, there is a team of modders out there who are determined to bring us something truly beautiful: a complete Lord of the Rings Total War experience. All I can say is:

Forget The Total War: Warhammer Release Date, Rise of Mordor Is Where It's At!

Above you can see an actual screenshot from within the game that has some beautiful textures thrown on it. However, this is very much a working progress. There are various members who are working on bringing The Lord of the Rings Franchise to us all in Total War, and they are as follows:

  • Members working on battle maps: Pataloon, Patryk, Nathan, Nistrum
  • Members working on campaign map models: guga380
  • Members working on the campaign map: uanime5 and Mr.J

Yep, you read that right, there's going to be a campaign. Now, this particular mod is being created within Total War: Attila. While this gives the modders a lot to work with, the only restrictive element is that they won't be able to amend the map in any form. They won't be able to change its shape and give us a full Middle Earth to roam around in. This is something that all of the modern Total War games have done (however, if a future installment changes this they'll move everything over). Therefore, the team is coming up with a creative way to create Middle Earth on the map of Europe. No easy task.

What the team actually have started to do is sink sections of the map. They're changing the structure of Europe by sinking its landmasses in order to replicate the land of J.R.R. Tolkien's creation. Serious respect. So if you take a look at there work above, you'll witness the true power of mods. Additionally they've had to erect barriers so that the AI doesn't continue to walk on a section of the map that no longer exists, or at least isn't submerged.

Aside from that, please say hello to all of the factions that this group are planning on cramming into this mod. They're simply beautiful. But if you really want to take an in-depth look at what the team is working on, check out THFE Productions' video on the mod below.

Also, this link will bring you to a page where you can comment on the maps and potentially influence how the developers create the cities of Middle Earth. Needless to say, this looks incredible!
