Now I haven't yet read all the SOIAF books, but I've heard and come up with many ideas as to Jon Snow's parentage. All the theories I have come across have one thing in common: Jon is definitely a Stark.

1. R.T.+L.S.=J.S.

I'm sure many have heard of this theory. The idea is that Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark fell in love and made Jon. Her last dying wish was for Ned to take him and keep him safe.

WHY THIS WORKS

Ned is very standoffish about Jon's mother, even with Robert. Also when heading out for Kings Landing he told Jon you don't have my name but you have my blood. He loves Jon. If he was Ned's child he would say son instead of blood.

WHY IT DOESN'T WORK

It is far too obvious. With all the twists and turns in the series why would one of the greatest mysteries be so easily solved by so many? To throw us off track.

2. Benjen Stark

Jon was made with some wench. Benjen takes or has already taken the black. Not being able to have children he begs his brother to take Jon. They have to keep this secret so that Benjen can keep his life. Eddard take the baby and keeps this secret.

WHY THIS WORKS

The only real reason I can see this is because of how he treats Jon. He has a fatherly air when he speaks to him.

WHY THIS DOESN'T WORK

This seems far-fetched but in the world of Game of Thrones it is quite possible.

3. Eddard Stark

Many believe what we have been told. Ned slept with a tavern whore producing his bastard.

WHY THIS WORKS

It is canon. Ned has taken the shame of having a bastard and has claimed Jon. Everyone makes mistakes and he was drunk most likely.

WHY THIS DOESN'T WORK

We know Eddard Stark. He's far to honorable for this. If it were true why didn't he tell Jon his mother's name or talk about her to Robert.

What are your thoughts on Jon Snow's parentage?
