I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since I first whacked Pokémon Red into my massive blocky Game Boy and woke up in Pallet Town. Since that time the franchise has evolved and evolved, from the card games that took my school by storm to movies and now an upcoming augmented reality game, Pokémon Go!
However, Pokémon Red and Blue will always be the classic Pokémon experience for my generation, so it's with a not insignificant amount of nostalgic glee that today we heard news Nintendo plans to re-release the originals in a special 20th Anniversary 3DS bundle.
Let Pokémon Red's 8bit intro lull you back to those heady days of the mid-1990s:
The 20th Anniversary 3DS comes pre-loaded with the original Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow as well as two changeable cover plates featuring Charizard and Blastoise (sorry Bulbasaur fans). Furthermore, the 3DS will also feature a special unique Pokémon menu theme.
The bundles, which release on February 27th (the same day that Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow arrive in the Nintendo eShop), are just one part of Pokémon's 20th birthday. As well as these bundles, we'll also see a commemorative Trading Card Game release, the launch of Pokémon Go, and mass mythical Pokémon distribution.
So, it seems like there'll be a lot of celebrations for Pokémon's anniversary. Make sure you stay tuned so you can catch 'em all.
