Ah, January. The endless possibilities of the new year unfolding before us, the potential for growth and expansion in all facets of life... Well forget your New Years resolutions, cause who needs the gym when you've got DC Universe Online?
Always in the background of online gaming but never really getting that breakthrough it deserves DC Universe Online isn't coming into 2016 lying down. As it celebrated its fifth anniversary earlier this week the free to play MMO came out firing on all cylinders with various announcements about the future of the franchise, so here's the rundown.
It's Coming To Xbox One (!!)
Not least of these announcements was the fact that DC Universe Online will be available to play on the Xbox ONE system as of "Spring 2016".
Unveiled by developers Daybreak Games via their Twitter feed (above), DC Universe Online - which was previously only available on PC, PS3 and PS4 systems will be coming to Microsoft's next-gen Xbox this year.
You can't transfer over your characters from other versions of the game though so you'll have to start anew, but hey at least that gives you an excuse to make and play with new characters.
And don't forget we've also got PC / PS4 cross-play launching on January 25, which will allow players from the two different platforms to team up within the same world. No news if this feature will be introduced to the Xbox ONE version yet though.
The Legends of Tomorrow Episode
The highly anticipated Legends of Tomorrow focused add-on Episode 21 will be released to fan the flames in the run up to the DC TV universe's release of the TV show of the same name.
Episode 21 will feature the Atom alongside Hawkgirl, Hawkman, Captain Cold and Heat Wave. But what's the best part (according to Daybreak Games' Creative Director S.J. Mueller anyway)?
"In Episode 21, one part, "The Final Piece," introduces a mysterious Time Traveler that is putting together a team for an urgent mission.... The coolest part of all this, though, is that this hero/villain team in the game also features the player character, meaning players will basically get to become a Legend of Tomorrow too."
Whilst there will be lines drawn between the TV show and the DC Universe Online add-on the two will remain separate narrative pieces though, with different costuming and voice actors being used.
New Superman Content (And More...)
When asked if the Legends of Tomorrow themed expansion means we might be seeing a [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) or Suicide Squad episode to coincide with the DC cinematic universe releases Mueller remained pretty coy though:
"The DC Comics universe is extremely vast, so there is a ton of content to work with. Sometimes it makes sense for content to reflect current happenings in the greater universe, and other times it just doesn't fit with current plans."
Whilst there aren't currently any plans to tie the game narrative along with the cinematic universe, Mueller revealed that Daybreak will be responding to player feedback asking for more Superman content, another feature which will arrive sometime in 2016.
The current line on the new Superman storyline is that it will begin in the Phantom Zone, will involve the City of Kando and feature Superman, Lois Lane, Zod, Ursa, Non, Supergirl and Superboy. Neat.
And that's not all! In addition to the new Superman content we've been promised "an all-new Harley Quinn arc" (exciting!) as well as the final pieces of the Halls of Power and Amazon Fury episodes.
That's all we know so far, and it's only January! Phew.
