A Point of Geeks report
We are just two short months away from Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice breaking open the doors of the newly formed DC cinematic universe, that began with Man of Steel. In the upcoming film, we will be introduced to many of the legendary figures from the pages of DC Comics, including Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).
Much of the attention has been on the films which are currently shooting, or in post-production, such as Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad. This has allowed Aquaman to swim under the radar, while director James Wan (Fast and Furious 7) is prepping to bring the character to life for the first time. However, thanks to a new report from THR, the spotlight is focused back on the project.
According to the scoop, actress Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) is in negotiations to play DC Comics's Atlantean Queen, Mera. Mera is the long-time love interest of Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, however they have a long and complicated relationship that did not necessarily begin with love. However, the casting of Heard is reportedly for another movie, before Aquaman. Here is what THR had to say about the character's introduction.
She will make her appearance first in Justice League, the movie that introduces various characters and story threads to fully launch the cinematic universe based on the DC Entertainment characters.
Filming on the Justice League movie begins soon, so the timing of the Heard casting does make sense. Mera's introduction in the film has also been rumored for some time, so it does seem as though this is indeed happening. The jury is out on if Heard is up to the task of portraying the character, who is not a minor character in DC lore. Mera is a formidable character, possessing super-strength and the ability to manipulate and control water. Aquaman and Mera are one of the biggest power couples in the pages of the DC Comics, so there will be a lot riding on the chemistry between Heard and Momoa.
Another interesting nugget in the THR report is that there are two scripts currently in development for the movie. One is being written by frequent Zack Snyder collaborator Kurt Johnstad (300) and the other is by Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2). It has been long reported that this was the approach to the project, however it's interesting that a take hasn't been settled on. At the end of the day, Aquaman will probably end up having a combination of both scripts. We will definitely be keeping our eyes on this one.
An icon for over 70 years, Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.
'Justice League: Part One' will be released on November 17, 2017, while 'Aquaman' will open on July 27th, 2018.
The second installment of the DCEU hits theaters March 25, check out the trailer for 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'.
