Mike's Horror Den

The upcoming release of The Boy on January 22nd got me thinking of all the creepy horror dolls I've seen throughout my life. Take a look at the trailer:

So, on behalf of the release, I decided to make a list of what I think are the best, and most creepy, horror dolls.

'Poltergeist' - The Clown

So first we have a family terrorized by ghosts in their new home. It wasn't bad enough that a tree came to life and the youngest child is taken into a ghost dimension, but the ghosts then had to possess a damn clown doll. The doll terrifies a young boy and many audiences to this day. Take a look at that terrifying scene below. Damn clown!

'Dolly Dearest' - Dolly

Dolly Dearest wasn't that great of a movie. It had a simple plot about a doll getting possessed by a demonic spirit and like most films, the doll only talks to a young child and begins killing people. The faces Dolly makes are pretty creepy looking. I know I would never give my daughters a doll like this.

'Dolls' - Mr.Punch

I really did like this older film, it has a slow start but gets better as it goes on. The writing wasn't that great, but the effects really made up for it. The stop motion used to show the dolls moving was really great. Mr. Punch, a jester-like doll, is the most used doll of the film. He has a creepy look to him, those big eyes and that creepy grin. However, he doesn't come to life until he needs to protect a young girl.

'The Twilight Zone' - Talky Tina

This sweet and innocent looking doll may not look very scary, but don't let her looks fool you. If you anger her, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Tina is given to a young girl with a mean and verbally abusive stepfather. He ignores Tina's warnings, even when she says "I'm Talky Tina and I'm going to kill you". I won't spoil the ending. This is one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes and is definitely worth a watch.

'Puppet Master' - Blade

Now I know that Blade is technically a puppet, but I see him more as a doll (tomayto, tomahto). Puppet Master is filled with great characters, but Blade has always been my favorite. He has a cool black coat, an awesome hat, and most importantly, a hook for one hand and a knife for the other. Not to mention spikes that come out of his eyes. Don't mess with Blade!

'Dead Silence' - Billy

From the moment you see Billy he freaks you out. A creepy looking ventriloquist dummy-looking doll, that belongs to the spirit of Mary Shaw. One of many dolls that are possessed by Mary Shaw, he is by far the freakiest one. Looking at his large terrifying eyes, pale skin, and creepy mouth. He also reminds me of Slappy from Goosebumps, but worse!

'The Conjuring'/'Annabelle' - Annabelle

Kicking off The Conjuring with a quick look at Ed and Lorraine Warren's encounter with this terrifying doll. Annabelle scared audiences so much that she was given her own origin film. A doll possessed by a malevolent spirit that was locked up by the Warrens. The fact that this is a true story, makes it even more horrifying. I would avoid buying used dolls from now on.

'Child's Play' - Chucky

Finally, the most infamous killer doll of them all, you're favorite Good Guy, Chucky. A doll possessed by the spirit of a serial killer through the art of voodoo. Although, the seriousness of these films has gone way down, Chucky has to be my favorite horror doll overall. He's creative with his kills and his humor has only gotten better over the years. I guess it had to, after making films like Seed of Chucky.
