So recently fans of the long awaited Fifty Shades Darker received the exciting news that production had been set to begin on February 9 of this year in Vancouver, heralding finally some solid news of the production which had seemingly been bogged down in the dreaded swamps of development hell.

When the original Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson left the franchise after the perils of working with living nightmare E. L. James, it looked like the sequel to the box office success but critical failure might be in danger.

When James Foley (At Close Range, Glengarry Glen Ross) was confirmed to be on board to direct Fifty Shades Darker (a choice criticised by Forbes) it seemed like some of the bumps on the road may have been smoothed out, but alas! The February 9 start date has been pushed back, with filming set to begin February 15 instead.

Disaster! Or Is It?

So yeah, it's only a week's delay, surely that won't affect things much?

Well probably not, but it's not great given the fact that Fifty Shades Darker had been spinning its wheels in pre-production for a while now. Likely this is just another pothole in the road towards the February 2017 release date.

After all filming was also delayed for the first instalment; production on Fifty Shades of Grey was supposed to start November 5 2013 but was pushed back to November 13, then December 1.

Filming ran through to February 21 2014, giving them nearly a year before release (though the film's editor wasn't impressed by it), which means Fifty Shades Darker will be running on a tighter schedule than its predecessor was, if it's going to make that release date.

Why The Delays?

There's been rumors of delays floating around for ages now, but likely its the casting holding things up, with the parts of Jack Hyde, Mrs. Robinson and Leila Williams all still to be cast.

It was rumoured that Henry Cavill, Ian Somerhalder, Theo James, Charlize Theron, Cara Delevingne and Alexis Bledel were all in talks to be attached, but none of them have commented on this, aside from Cavill who spoke out just to say that he wasn't involved in the movie at all.

At the moment the only cast members that we have confirmed are those who are reprising their roles from Fifty Shades of Grey:

  • Dakota Johnson - Anastasia Steele
  • Jamie Dornan - Christian Grey
  • Rita Ora - Mia Grey
  • Eloise Mumford - Kate
  • Max Martini - Taylor
  • Luke Grimes - Elliot Grey
  • Victor Rasuk - José Rodriguez

Otherwise we know that James Foley is confirmed to be on board to direct, and E. L. James' husband Niall Leonard has penned the script for Fifty Shades Darker, so good luck James Foley I guess.

Finally we've got our official synopsis now, as taken from IMDB:

"While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her."

Awesome, I guess? Now someone go remind Jamie Dornan to switch the oven off.

Fifty Shades Darker is scheduled for a February 10, 2017 release, with Fifty Shades Freed arriving February 9, 2018.
