Another year gone by, another batch of worthy reasons to get your thumbs moving. But what do you think was the best selling game of 2015? The Witcher 3? Metal Gear Solid V? Well, shockingly, neither of those stellar titles even made it into the top 10. So what did?

2015 NPD Results:

  • 1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  • 2. Madden NFL 16
  • 3. Fallout 4
  • 4. Star Wars: Battlefront
  • 5. Grand Theft Auto V
  • 6. NBA 2K16
  • 7. Minecraft
  • 8. FIFA 16
  • 9. Mortal Kombat X
  • 10. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Yes, Activision's world-dominating FPS continues to maintain its vice-like grip on the industry. Interestingly, Black Ops 3 tipped the franchise over the 250 million mark this year; a record beaten only by Pokémon (275 million) and the Super Mario series (310 million).

Not even Grand Theft Auto can keep up with the insanely popular military shooter, having sold around 220 million copies to date.

The highest selling franchise when measured per installment is Wii Sports, though it takes the top spot a little unfairly. Its 200 million + sales were made possible by virtue of it being included with Nintendo's console.

But how about the highest rated game of 2015?

Top Rated Games of 2015 (according to Metacritic):

  • 1. Grand Theft Auto V (PC release)
  • 2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • 3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • 4. Undertale
  • 5. Bloodborne
  • 6. Shovel Knight
  • 7. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth
  • 8. Pillars of Eternity
  • 9. Kerbal Space Program
  • 10. The Talos Principle

Shockingly, just one game appears on both lists, indicating you don't necessarily have to make a great game for it to sell well. Don't tell that to the publishers.
