There was no sophomore slump for the second television show out of the gates for Marvel and Netflix with Jessica Jones. It's Marvel's second live-action show featuring a female lead following [Marvel's Agent Carter](tag:1119765) and its first female superhero lead on TV. However, the show ended up being one of the more psychological complex dramas to air in 2015, which effectively stretched the boundaries on what to expect from the studio.
The success of the show was even more impressive considering that the character is a recent creation in the comics and wasn't that well known, even among Marvel fans. However, the show's first season was a huge success and a completely unique entry into the superhero genre. Fans were left in suspense regarding the possibility of a second season and seeing the continued adventures of Ms. Jones. During a speech to Television Critics Association, Ted Sarandos, the Chief Content Officer of Netflix, announced that there will indeed be a second season of Jessica Jones. He also confirmed the return of showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, who helped to craft the show's unique voice.
Actress Krysten Ritter brought Jessica Jones to life and explained her elation about the announcement of the second season as well.
“I love Jessica and I’m so excited to see what happens next for her. When I watched the show the weekend it came out with everybody else, I was like, ‘Okay, what’s next?’ Which is kind of what happens with all the Netflix shows. You need more. So I’m excited to see where she goes next and how she handles this next chapter of her life.”
It's fun to think that Ritter was binge-watching the show the first weekend along with the rest of us. In the show's first season (spoilers), Jones' biggest adversary Kilgrave (David Tennant) was killed, so many are wondering who her opposition will be next. At the end of the season, it seemed that while she is still deeply scarred psychologically, she had turned a corner and was literally back in business.
A release date wasn't announced, however the scheduling of the second season will be like putting together a complicated puzzle. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the team-up series, The Defenders. Sarandos explains the complicated slate.
“The complex one is really running into The Defenders. The Defenders production schedule will determine the production schedule of second and third seasons. It’s a work in progress.”
This second season announcement of Jessica Jones is right on the heels of a hot rumor that Marvel and Netflix are developing a spin-off series for The Punisher. While Sarandos could not confirm the show at this time, it certainly sounds like the whispers are indeed true.
“It’s always possible. All the characters that spin out of that universe could also spin out. Any character who’s in there is on the table but it’s nothing I can talk about yet.”
This is a very exciting time to be a fan of Marvel and to have (or have the password of someone who has) a subscription to Netflix. They are going full speed ahead with their partnership and it looks like the universe will continue to expand in unique ways. We will be bringing you a lot more info and scoops on the second season of Jessica Jones, so keep checking back.
