Tom Holland is ready to leap into the Marvel Cinematic Universe fray as a brand new version of Spider-Man, and fans couldn't be more excited. But aside from the initial announcements, what exactly do we know about this new webslinger? We've had plenty of little hints, and when you piece them together they start to tell a larger story...

He's An Amateur Superhero

Possibly the most surprising revelation about Holland's Spider-Man is that this fresh faced kid isn't new to the superhero business.

Tom Holland is the new Peter Parker

"There is a young kid already running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet."

So said Kevin Feige when he was asked about how this new Spider-Man will fit into the Avengers' universe. And this has huge implications: we're not really getting another Spider-Man origin story (thank goodness) with Holland, but rather a heroic kid who's got his own ideas about how to be a superhero. Which is very interesting considering which movie Spider-Man will debut in...

He's Gonna Be In Civil War

Considering what a huge role Spider-Man has in the comic Civil War, it would be strange to leave him out of the big screen adaptation. But as the MCU is so different, it's going to be interesting to see how the Russos resolve this issue. After all, it's not like they can recreate this epic unmasking scene...

Spider-Man, unmasked in Civil War.
Spider-Man, unmasked in Civil War.

In the Civil War comic, Peter Parker is much older than fifteen. He's married to Mary Jane, and he's protected his identity during many years of being a superhero. His decision to unmask is a huge turning point in the story, and his decision to side with Iron Man, then Captain America, fuels the conflict.

But in the MCU, Peter Parker knows neither of these heroes. They're not old friends with personal stakes in the issue, and it's still unclear as to whether the movie will focus on in a large way on how Spider-Man feels his loyalties divided. Actually, the elimination of Spider-Man from all the film's marketing so far seems to suggest that he really won't have that big of a role at all. But this is all guesswork. Let's move on to what we do know.

He Might Have Two Suits

Why is the costuming relevant? Well, it hints that Peter might switch sides in the Civil War movie just as he did in the comic book.

The Iron Spider suit.
The Iron Spider suit.

Y'see, in the comic Iron Man builds Spidey a whole new suit, earning him the name the Iron Spider. So is this the other suit we'll see in Civil War? Maybe not, according to comicbook.com, who reported a rumour that after Peter Parker teams up with... someone... he'll get a new, more "Avengers friendly" suit. I guess that makes sense.

Solo Movie Will Draw From John Hughes

The MCU are known to play with genres: Winter Soldier is a political thriller, while Thor is more like a fantasy epic. And for Spider-Man's solo movie (coming sometime in 2017), Marvel are dusting off the John Hughes boxsets for inspiration. Honestly, this is the best news about the new Spidey I've heard yet. Who doesn't want a Ferris Bueller style Marvel movie?!

Just... give us Peter saying this line. Please.
Just... give us Peter saying this line. Please.

Kevin Feige gave BirthMoviesDeath the scoop, explaining how they want to draw from Hughes' much loved films.

"We haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us."

It might have been a while since we've seen a good Hughes-esque teen movie, but the world moves pretty fast these days. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.

He'll Probably Be In Infinity War

Nothing's confirmed yet but c'mon, are Marvel really gonna buy such a popular superhero and then not put him in the massive interplanetary fight all the movies have been building up to?

Spider-Man is an Avenger

I think it's a safe bet to say he'll be in it.

Bonus: Miles Morales?!

When Marvel first announced that they'd won Spider-Man in the deal with Sony, many fans were hoping that the Spider-Man to feature in the MCU wouldn't be Peter Parker, but someone else. And with Miles Morales officially taking over as Spider-Man in the comics, he was the top of everyone's alternative Spidey list.

Heck yeah you are.
Heck yeah you are.

So what about his entrance into the MCU? Well, all we have are rumours and hearsay, but we do know it's being discussed over at Marvel HQ. We may have to wait until Spidey's solo movie sequel, but it looks like Miles Morales' big screen debut is just a matter of time.

And there you have it folks! All you need to know about Spider-Man in the MCU. Is there anything we missed off the list? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
