Okay, so this is has been bugging me. Just how DID Maz Kanata come into the lightsaber formerly belonging to Anakin and Luke Skywalker in Star WarsEpisode 7: The Force Awakens?
It was last seen falling beside Luke’s hand after Darth Vader chopped it off in the Empire Strikes Back, falling down one of the many endless pits at Cloud City that seem to be littered around the galaxy.
However, in TFA it ‘called to’ Rey, with the scavenger then having a vision of Kylo Ren and his Knights with Luke seen with R2-D2 on a mysterious lava planet (Mustafar possibly?)
What I really want – and need – to know is how did Maz get it? It’s a story ‘for another time’ according to the character herself, a story that Han Solo will now unfortunately never hear.
The lightsaber is a symbol of the good that exists deep within the Jedi. It was Anakin’s during his days of fighting for the Republic, Luke’s when he went toe to toe with Vader and Rey’s when she mercilessly beat Kylo Ren on Starkiller base.
It was also used by Finn once Rey refused to take it at Takodana, but his lack of force ability means the other three are able to use the weapon in more spectacular ways.
Is that a guarantee that it was an ally of the old Rebel Alliance that gave it to Maz? Lando left Cloud City to help save Solo from Jabba’s Palace, but it’s perfectly plausible that his ally Lobot could have scavenged it from the depths of the city.
Or, as lightsabers seem to do, what if it called to her? Sensing her allegiance to the light, and potentially her links to the old days of the Jedi, what if Maz picked it up knowing it could serve a purpose further down the line.
It is one of the biggest questions that Episodes 8 and 9 will need to answer and it could be key in determining whether Luke and Rey can beat Kylo Ren and the First Order in restoring peace to the galaxy.
