1. Bone Tomahawk

As well as achieving the most grisly scene of the year, Bone Tomahawk exceeded all expectations in 2015 with its 'The Wild West Has Eyes' cannibal cowboy drama.

Avenged (also released as Savaged) sees a deaf girl take revenge against the slobbering bunch of rednecks who put her in the ground. Think I Spit On Your Grave goes Redsploitation and you're about there.

3. Phenomena (a.k.a. Creepers)

Sure, it's unlikely many horror fans will have missed this gem of the genre, but I had to put it in because it's such an incredible film. Worthy of a rewatch, certainly - especially the memorable climax (don't watch if you haven't seen this Argento classic)!

4. The Neon Demon

Grisly, sharp and incredibly stylish, Neon Demon is at once a celebration and an indictment of societal notions of beauty, splicing scenes of extreme violence and devastation with those of models touting effortless chic.

5. Goodnight Mommy

When Elias and Lukas's mother gets back from the hospital after cosmetic surgery, something is very wrong. The kids just have to work out exactly what has crept into their family... Believe the hype.

7. Trouble Every Day
