J'onn trains Kara on proper flight technique, then they group up with Alex to make a plan to break into room 52 at Lord Tech. Alex and Kara try to convince J'onn to use his abilities to get in, but J'onn is hesitant. Winn's father breaks out of prison and asks his son to meet with him. After talking to the authorities, Winn tells Kara about his father and goes to meet him. Winn wears a bug so that the FBI can listen in on them and after he fails to convince his dad to turn himself in the agents storm in and open fire. It turns out to be an illusion and the agents question Winn. With Winn wanting to have his dad killed to prevent people from getting hurt, Kara tries to convince him other wise and tells him she will help. Jimmy and Lucy argue after Cat offers her a job which Jimmy is less than ecstatic about. Alex comes up with a plan to distract Lord while J'onn breaks into the room at Lord Tech. J'onn shapeshifts into Lord and finds a woman subject in Room 52. One of Lord's men comes to the room after an alarm was triggered and nearly makes J'onn. J'onn uses his telepathic abilities to wipe the man's memory. He promises the woman that he will come back to get her. Back at the DEO he shows Alex what he found, but is unsure how Lord is keeping the woman alive or what he doing to her. He then tells Alex that people were going to get hurt if he used his abilities and that was what happened. Winn helps Kara find his father at the Slingshot toy factory. Once she arrives, Toyman traps Kara in thermite laced quick sand and leaves her to save a young girl he has locked in chest dangling high up. She is able to get out, but realizes that it was only a toy. Afraid that his bottled up emotions and his anger will one day turn him into his father, Winn tells Kara to stand clear and let the agents deal with it. She tells him that she can help put his father away so that he doesn't live with the guilt of having his father killed. They share a moment and he kisses Kara, immediately regretting it. As he walks away from the her apartment, his father kidnaps him. The Toyman tells his son of his plan to finally be together, but Winn refuses to help him. Toyman tells Winn to kill Chester Dunhultz at the Toy Con being held at the Convention Hall, or else he will detonate ten bombs he has planted all over the venue. Winn is unable to go through with it and then fires a round into the air. The FBI show up and fire at Winn who is saved at the last moment by Kara. Winn tells her about the bombs and she is able to shield everyone by creating an ice wall with her super breath. She then captures the Toyman. Lucy and Jimmy make amends with Jimmy telling her she is happy for her. Kara talks to Winn who finally confesses his feelings for her, with both knowing that their friendship has changed. After flying around the city to clear her head, she joins her sister who already knew about her predicament with Winn. The sisters feel like they have let someone down, Kara with Winn, and Alex with J'onn. Unbeknownst to them Lord is watching through a camera he planted on Alex's bag, happy in finding out that the two are sisters.
We didn't have to wait to long for Martian Manhunter to take flight with Supergirl and although it was for a brief moment, we'll take it. Here are some other notable scenes.
Winslow Schott Sr./Toyman: Winn's father, who was locked in prison for killing six innocent civilians for revenge against his boss. He is a brilliant toy maker and a psychopath, stopping at nothing to be reunited with his son. Like his comic book counterpart, he is a mechanical genius who creates many violent, destructive, and dangerous toys.
Agent Cameron Chase: A no nonsense FBI agent on the hunt for Toyman. She is a bit different her comic book counterpart who was an agent of the DEO whose job was to monitor and neutralize metahuman threats to national security. In the comics she was a metahuman who was able to dampen and sometimes remove other metas powers.
Chester Dunhultz: A man who stole Winslow Schott Sr.'s toy ideas and profited off them, causing him to go mad. Winslow sent a bomb intended for Chester, but it killed other innocent people instead. In the comics he was a bully from Winslow's childhood who stole the first toy he ever made.
Team Supergirl- The team were only together for a moment in this episode. With Kara and Winn having to face the Toyman on their own and Jimmy dealing with his own problems.
Kara and J'onn- Seeing these two fly around started the episode off just right. Kara finally has someone other than Clark, who understands what it's like to be different and someone who can help her fully understand her abilities.
Kara, J'onn and Alex- Finally these three are all in the same page. While Kara does well with her own team, it looks like her partnership with the DEO is going to get better.
Kara and Winn- What can I say about this one. OUCH. Although it looked like Winn may have just friend zoned himself, we still have some glimmer of hope things will get better for these two. She stood by him the whole time with this whole ordeal involving his father. He was pretty emotional and his feelings for Kara have been pretty obvious so we can understand why he kissed her. She was saying and doing all the right things, it's just that she doesn't feel the same way....yet. Looks like their friendship will go through the ringer in these coming episodes, but I think they can fix things. All in due time. They did kick butt and save the day together though. Hopefully this doesn't have too much of an effect on Team Supergirl though.
Kara and Alex- The episode ended with these two telling each other how much they screwed up their friendships. Kara with Winn and Alex with J'onn. Too bad they were spilling the beans without knowing someone was watching and listening to them. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Pretty sad for someone with all the abilities in the world and an expert agent who's job is to analyze people. Come on. The Danver sister everyone! Still love them though.
Kara and Cat- Cat knows everything. It sucks that they took back the whole Supergirl reveal for her, but she will find out again. She does know about Kara's crush on Jimmy and it's adorable when Kara tries to prove otherwise.
Winn Jr and Winn Sr- Its amazing to see how Winn grew up to be such a good person without his father. They may be blood, but Winn proved that he was not at all like his dear old dad. He put his own life on the line to protect people instead of carrying out his dad's evil plan. Hopefully he continues to stay on the right path and not go to the dark side.
Alex and J'onn- The reason for J'onn not wanting to reveal himself and use his powers are valid. People wouldn't be so trusting of a giant green alien who is one of the most powerful beings on the earth. Alex convinced him to use his abilities and it had it's consequences. Looks like their friendship is also going to be put to the test in the coming episodes.
Alex and Lord- I thought that these two were going to be an item when this show started, but it looks like they are just trying to best each other. Looks like Lord came out at the top this time. Him learning that Supergirl and Alex are sisters is sure to give the Danvers some trouble.
Cameron Chase, Winn and Kara- She did not make the best first impression and we get that her job is to stop the bad guys. But did she seriously have to be so anal the whole entire time. She was more than willing to shoot first and ask questions later, shown when she fired at Toyman and then at Winn. Good thing Kara came just in time to save him.
Jimmy and Lucy- Their drama seemed a little out of place this episode. While Kara and Winn were busy dealing with his homicidal father, Jimmy and Lucy were having relationship problems. It turns out in the end that they were fighting for completely different reasons. Jimmy's reason made sense because of his involvement with team Supergirl and not wanting Lucy to get in the crossfire. Of course he didn't admit it though.
Superman Rocket Ride- A little kiddie ride that was sitting just outside of the arcade Winn's father was holed up in.
Stern- The sticker had the name Stern on it. This is a nod to Franklin Stern who in the DC comics, is the owner and publisher of the Daily Planet newspaper.
Toyman Doll #1- This is the Toyman design in Superfriends.
Toyman Doll #2-If you've seen Superman: The Animated Series this is what he looked like.
Mata Hari- The caller ID Lord has for Alex. Mata Hari was a Dutch Frisian exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy and executed by firing squad in France under charges of espionage for Germany during World War I. There is also a character based on her in the comics. Lord is a savage.
Room 52- We are just filling out New 52 Easter Egg quotas and this was the only and obvious one.
Thermite- This is small but thermite has been seen on another DC Comic show. I think that if Colonel Cold were still alive, he would have gotten along with Toyman. They both like the thermite. Still waiting on The Flash and Supergirl crossover. It's going to happen.
What's to Come/Theories:
Looks like the White Martians are coming to town and it seems like they are going to be giving the all powerful J'onn Jonz a hard time. What's interesting is that their leader is posing as a political figure who wants to hunt down other aliens, although she is one herself. Finally the Supergirl and Martian Manhunter team up is coming a lot sooner. The girl in the bed was shown to have chemicals in her body that should have melted her, but is still alive with minimal brain activity. At first we were very sold on her being an OMAC but now it's more like 60%. The other 40% on her being Bizarro Supergirl who is supposed to pop up very soon.
With the first episodes being focused on Kara fighting off the aliens who escaped from Fort Rozz, it was nice to see another villain who isn't super powered. We were wanting for the Toyman to show up and although his capture at the end was a bit anti climatic, it doesn't look like he's a one and done. With that being said we got to explore Winn's character a lot more and find him coming out as the hero in this one. Hopefully he continues to stay strong and on the right path. Like Kara said, she and the team need him, but judging from what went down this episode between the two, it won't be that easy for things to get back to normal. This episode gets 4.9 Kryptos out of 5. This show is definitely getting better. What did you think about the episode? Leave it in the comments below we'd love to read them!
