David Ayer's attempt to make a team of villains relevant to the movie going public just got its first real trailer after Comic-Con patrons forced their hand in mid-2015. This trailer has action, humour and a lot of small details that deserve analysis and may show some minute details about the film. As always everything that follows is speculation and may all be disproven by trailer 2.
CAPTAIN BOOMERANG IS THE COMEDIC RELIEF
Captain Boomerang in the trailer had three moments to shine and two of them were comedic. David Ayer is bringing some self-awareness to the character and playing of the silliness of a guy that throws boomerangs. This is good because in the comics he was treated as a joke often being mocked by Deadshot for being a C list villain. It is great to see that the comedy elements haven't been lost in the translation from page to screen.
THE SOULTAKER LIVING UP TO ITS NAME
The character of Katana requires no explanation to fans of Arrow but she boils down to your standard DC powerless character with hand to hand skills, a tragic backstory and a signature mask all fitting the mould. Her sword in the comics is named the Soultaker and is said to have the souls of all the people it has killed trapped in it including Katana's dead husband. This would be weird but considering the next character on the team it wouldn't surprise me.
ENCHANTRESS HAS SPLIT PERSONALITIES
It's no secret that this character looks weird as hell but she has a good excuse. Julie Moon was possessed by a ancient sorceress with both her normal personality and the entity living inside her fighting for control. The line 'she's possessed by a witch' tells us that they have kept another element from the comics adding another layer of depth to the team.
While there is nothing specific to say that it is Gotham I believe it is for several reasons.
- Warner Bros overreliance on the Batman mythology.
- The Joker being the central villain.
- It is shown to have a subway system in the trailer. Just like Gotham in the comics.
- Arkam Asylum is confirmed to appear.
For all of these reasons I believe this is Gotham City. I could be wrong but all the signs point towards the home of the Dark Knight.
A lot of the leaks surrounding this movie relate to the Harley origin scenes and the shot above confirms it. This scene also bears striking resemblance to a scene in the early pages of the New 52 Suicide Squad where the Joker pushed Harley into the pit of chemicals that gave Joker his look. This shows David Ayer again staying true to the lore of the team and the DC universe.
David Ayer's Suicide Squad is shaping up to be a very good film that is accurate to its source material. If you have anything to add to the discussion or you think I am morally corrupt please tell me in the comments.
