Let's all face it... David Harewood's incarnation of Hank Henshaw/J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter is arguably the greatest thing about CBS's Supergirl TV show. But something that J'onn said (well, technically Hank said it, but it's all the same thing), caught my attention and left me questioning his meaning. Supergirl's adoptive sister Alex asks J'onn to use his powers (specifically his ability to shapeshift) to infiltrate Lord Technologies. J'onn is resistant to the idea and says to her...
"When I change my state… Shapeshift into someone new… call upon new powers… I get one step closer to becoming the Martian Manhunter forever."
Now, obviously, he could, in this case, be speaking figuratively, (which he probably is), but, on the off chance he's not and actually means the above statement literally, what could it mean for our favorite Martian?
Okay guys, I get it. He was probably speaking figuratively. But, just for sake of argument, what if he's not? The above comment could arguably be construed to imply that every time Martian Manhunter uses one of his abilities, especially that of shapeshifting, he gets "one step closer to becoming the Martian Manhunter forever". This almost sounds like he's saying he only has a limited number of times he is able to shapeshift, and that once that limit is reached, he will permanently revert to his Martian form. And, from the first part of his comment, it almost sounds as though using any of his other abilities brings that limit closer as well. Now, obviously, if this (highly unlikely) theory is, in fact true, does this mean that once he permanently becomes the Martian that his other powers will become useless as well? I think not. Looking at the entire quote, it seems that J'onn's ability to shapeshift is the only one in serious jeopardy, however, we can also gather that using his other powers accelerates the rate at which it becomes useless.
