Hollywood's voluptuous vixen Penélope Cruz is totally unrecognizable in her latest role in Spanish tear-jerker Ma Ma. Portraying a breast cancer victim, Cruz sports a make-up free face and shaved head to highlight the devastating brutality of the disease, a look which is a far cry from her usual glamorous aesthetic.

Described as a 'smiling-through-tears saga,' Ma Ma tells the heartbreaking story of Magda's (Cruz) life after finding a lump in her breast. You follow her as she's told she will need a mastectomy and debilitating chemo treatments, all while dealing with a recent break up. The narrative develops as she forms a new relationship with recent widower Julian (Asier Etxeandia), who's coping with the loss of his family.

It's real light hearted stuff.

Cruz reportedly felt honored to play Magda's character, a role which was undoubtedly stressful to do justice to — after all, breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S alone. She said:

"This is one of the most wonderful characters that I will ever be offered to play. I fell in love with the story of this woman, who is like a goddess, a sage."

And when asked whether the drastic change in appearance bothered her, Cruz responded:

"It was very important to me to take risks and at no time did I worry if I looked beautiful, was ugly or very ugly. It is a tribute to all women who face this disease."

Ma Ma was released in Spain last year and is now set for worldwide release. Check out the trailer below:
