There's not long to go until The Walking Dead returns to our screens after the winter break, and there's a lot to look forward to after the tense midseason finale last year. Not least of all is the fact that the iconic series villain Negan will be arriving soon to torment the survivors in the form of Jeffery Dean Morgan, bringing possible deadly consequences for a few fan favorites.

But Negan isn't the only new arrival to the cast, and he's not the only one we've been waiting for. Yep, the second half of The Walking Dead season 6 is set to introduce Paul Monroe, better known in the comic books as Jesus (no, not that Jesus). This ain't no son of God, The Walking Dead's Jesus is basically a goddamn ninja ass kicking machine.

Who's This Jesus Guy Then?

Jesus is kind of a big deal. He's not just a "complete badass" when it comes to kicking zombie ass, he's also a skilled survivalist, tactician and diplomat who forges relations between the mistrustful survivors at Alexandria and the community from which he hails - Hilltop.

And then a while back it was revealed that Jesus was gay, and creator of the comic book series Robert Kirkman's comments on the matter are wonderful:

"In my opinion there should be more awesome gay people in fiction because there are plenty of awesome gay people in real life. I want Jesus to be a character where his sexuality is as unimportant as Rick or other heterosexual characters. So we won't focus on it constantly and it won't be the focus of any big storylines for him... but he'll make out with a dude every now and then... before going out and drop kicking zombies. He's one of my current favorite characters."

"He'll make out with a dude every now and then... before going out and drop kicking zombies" - amazing.

Tom Payne's Looking The Part

So Paul Monroe is given the nickname Jesus not just because of his patient and altruistic nature (unless you get on his bad side) but also for his physical appearance - long haired and bearded.

We found out a while back that British actor and general pretty boy Tom Payne was on board to join the cast of Season 6 as the aforementioned Jesus, and he's certainly got the look down as his recent Instagram pictures reveal:

Beard? Check.

Long hair? Well, it's getting there.

Set to be introduced in episode 10 of Season 6, which will air on 21 Feb, Jesus is sure to shake things up for the survivors when he shows up.

Thankfully, unlike Negan, he's a welcome presence at Alexandria, and will be kicking around to help Rick and co. deal with with the fallout of that hulking great baseball bat...

'The Walking Dead' Season 6 returns with 'No Way Out' on February 14.
