I wrote this article as a supporting piece to Flamingo Island’s newest video: “Top Films of 2016!?” (Which is definitely worth a watch). In the video myself and my YouTube partner James Hayes discuss some of the major motion pictures hitting cinemas this year. My list includes mostly large blockbusters produced under the watchful eye of the mouse house, as well as the sneaky inclusion of the hugely anticipated villain extravaganza, Suicide Squad. My ‘Top 5’ were largely picked by my personal anticipation. I wanted to go further into detail into what I actually think will be the highest grossing film of the year and although it narrowly missed my ‘Top 5’, I have confidence in Batman vs Superman winning that ‘award’.

Batman vs Superman is just months from release.

Batman vs Superman is going to be released to the population very soon (March 25th) and the before lifeless hype train is once again powered thanks to improved trailers and TV spots as well as their special that premiered on CW earlier this week ‘DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League’. Ultimately the vastly improved marketing isn’t the only reason why Warner Brothers film is going to perform so well at the box-office, they also have a singular character in this movie who is known as a box-office juggernaut; Batman.

Batman has a lifelong presence on both the big screen and the small screen making him an instantly recognisable character for the casual movie audience which in the long run will be liable for Batman vs Superman becoming the biggest film of 2016. Batman is also coming off a very well received trilogy which thrived both critically and financially. Batman is so widely iconic that as an onscreen character he now competes with James Bond.

Although instantly recognisable, Superman just isn’t the sort of character that puts extensive amounts of people in cinema seats, in recent years Kal-El has been overtaken in business reputation by other comic book heroes such as Spiderman, Iron Man, Captain America and even The Guardians of the Galaxy. But the Man of Steel shouldn’t fear as his newest bat dressed acquaintance will take him to the top of box-office and ultimately making them the champion of 2016.

Rogue One is Disney's second Star Wars film.

In order to be rational it is important I discuss any potential competition Batman vs Superman might have. Of course the obvious choice is Star Wars, but I have to object Rogue One of the grounds of the definitive confusion it will cause the population that don’t understand this is a spinoff and not a continuation of The Force Awakens (Episode 7). Marvel also have a front runner is Civil War which I do believe will be hugely successful but it doesn’t have the excitement of seeing Batman return to the big screen. Perhaps if Marvel took a different approach with their marketing and began teasing Spiderman’s involvement in the film then perhaps it would stand at better chance of topping the DC champions.

Animation is also a juggernaut in the movie industry, of course we have Finding Dory (which didn’t make my ‘Top 5’) that has highly anticipated for years and will have huge marketing campaign thanks to the involvement of Ellen ellen DeGeneres the titled character. Angry Birds also has a 2016 release and will be immensely popular with the young tablet using generation. Disney also has Zootopia which is coming off a fantastic trailer which has since gained over six million views in just over three weeks; this could be an unexpected hit in the same way Frozen was in 2013.

The Jungle Book (2016) wowed audiences at D23.

Although there is vast amounts of competition for Batman vs Superman, Disney’s The Jungle Book is the only film that can truly beat it. Disney’s live action fairy-tale films have for a long time performed brilliantly at the box-office whether that Alice in Wonderland (2010) or Maleficent (2014). The trailer was also tremendously popular receiving almost twenty million views on Disney’s official YouTube account. There also seems to be a lot of support for this film considering the backlash CGI films have been receiving recently.

So what do you guys think? Will Batman vs Superman top the 2016 box-office? Or do you think another film will smash the first on screen meeting of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight?

With Batman vs Superman, Star Wars: Rogue One, X-Men: Apocalypse and many more, 2016 is set to be a huge year for films! But which are going to best? Which are going to be the biggest? Connor and James from Flamingo Island discuss some of the films they are looking forward too and how they think they might perform.
