[Star Wars: Battlefront](tag:2684021) is one of those games which has the tendency to divide gamers. An visually beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable online multiplayer in its own right, some fans have criticised it for the lack of single-player campaign and the somewhat repetitive gameplay.
We've been waiting for DLC news for a while now - hoping for something new and exciting to inject life back into the game - and it looks like we've finally got some! (Note that this news pertains to a free DLC package, not DLC that forms part of the Battlefront Season Pass.)
So a video from EA Brazil (which has now been removed from YouTube for unknown reasons) landed yesterday, the details for which were quickly snapped up by Reddit users doing Gods work. The video detailed quite a few exciting announcements about the future of the game. Here's a quick breakdown:
A New Tatooine Map
This in particular has really gotten people talking as the desert planet of Tatooine provides the backdrop for our introduction to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, as well as the home world of Anakin / Darth Vader.
There's a lot of possibilities for this map. Could we finally get to play through that wretched hive of scum and villainy, Mos Eisley? Can we shoot first in the Cantina? What about podracing (minus the annoying Force child)? Can we go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters?
Everybody loves new outfits, right? Well the DLC is reported to include some fancy new fashion for Luke, Leia (and possibly Han) based on the costumes they wear on the ice planet Hoth in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
Given that the Heroes' Holiday community event was based on Luke and Han it's likely that we'll be getting a Hoth outfit for Han too, especially since Leia already has her Hoth outfit in Battlefront. But which ones will our heroes get? Will we have Tauntaun Luke in the white coat or will we finally get to play as the Jedi in his X-Wing pilot gear?
Daily Challenges & Community Events
The concept of daily challenges and community events is pretty exciting as it gives EA a lot of scope to play with and reward the dedicated gamer - though we can see the daily challenges taking over our lives!
This mechanic has worked well in the past for online multiplayer games like Battlefield with their events, assignments and double XP weekends and GTA V's freemode events, and would translate well over into Star Wars: Battlefront too. Fingers crossed that they come up with some new and exciting formats for these challenges and events.
Now private matches are something that fans have been waiting for for a while now (if the Reddit messaging boards are anything to go by), and it looks like it's finally going to happen with the next update.
This means players might be able to arrange their own private tournaments against their friends and rivals online. Private matches are a big deal because they allow Battlefront users to organize their matches to play any way they want, so if we do get them with the next update that'd be a big step forward for the game.
We don't yet have a release date for the new DLC, but it is expected to be released along with the new update before the end of January. Which is only a week away so, we'll see how that pans out.
