Arrow has been rather up and down over the last few seasons, but those of us who have struck with the hit CW series know that the vigilante drama has its endearing elements.
In addition to strong yet often challenging relationships between vigilante heroes like Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and John Diggle (David Ramsey), there is also Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards).
Yes: Felicity. The smoaking hot and lovable geek has been a fan-favorite since the beginning, making her relationship with Oliver and her (often underdeveloped) personal story arch of great appeal.
Let's flash-forward to the present. In the mid-season finale we saw the newly-engaged Felicity gunned down and we now know know that she's wheelchair-bound... apparently forever.
I've recently written that this could work wonders for her character development, offering Emily Bett Rickards a chance to stretch her creative muscles. However, there's a lot more to be considered.
What can we expect to see from Felicity in the future?
No need to worry, Arrow-fans, there's no speculation here. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive Arrow producer, Wendy Mericle discussed the future of The CW golden girl. Consequently, all upcoming quotes and information come to us courtesy of E.W.
Interestingly and rather unfortunately, Mericle revealed that Felicity's primary focus will be Oliver.
"She knows Oliver has a tendency to revert to [his darker ways]. Despite herself, she’s still in shock about what happened, and her focus is going to be mostly, and interestingly, on Oliver and trying to keep him from falling back into this dark hole he’s been in the past."
Before the Olicity fans riot outside the Moviepilot offices, let me just point out that I'm a huge fan of The Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, Stephen Amell... whatever he's going by these days. But I want to see Team-Arrow grappling with their own issues from time to time. Felicity's health issues should make her the brooding victim for a few episodes, don't you think?
2. Is Felicity to become Oracle?
I've written about this before, which you can check out here. But the short answer is "no", Felicity isn't destined to become Oracle. Let's look back to Wendy Mericle and E.W. for a broader explanation.
"She is not Oracle. We are going to give her a very fun, cool name in a future episode. It’s going to be fun. We definitely want to give her a codename. It’s been a long time coming, but no, she’s not going to be Oracle."
Right, so are we done with this debate? Cool. We're getting an all new, bright and shiny Felicity, with a codename and a wheelchair, but no Oracle I'm afraid.
3. What will be Felicity's new role?
Arrow executive producer... that's right, it's Mericle again! Our new favorite exec continues by saying that Oliver is going to encourage Felicity to play to her strengths.
"He’s optimistic that her power lies in her brain. She can still do everything that she wants to do. This is not the end of anything, it’s more of a new beginning."
Now that's some character development I like; as I said, I want to see Felicity dealing with this hurdle and coming out of the situation stronger, which is exactly the character development she needs. It'll be great seeing Emily Bett Rickards adding greater depth to her role as team-Arrow's leading lady.
"We’re going to be taking her on a little bit of a dark journey of her own as she tries to grapple with the reality of this new situation. It’s a huge game-changer, obviously, for her."
So, what will be Felicity's future role? It seems that her position on team-Arrow won't be changing too much, but she'll be dealing with a few personal issues. No complaints: at least we aren't losing Felicity!
4. Is Felicity's wheelchair a permanent addition to the show?
Right, let's jump straight to it on this one. Is Felicity going to be wheelchair-bound forever? No. Or at least our friendly neighbourhood Arrow exec has said we'll see her stand in the future.
"I definitely think there will be a time and place in the future where we could see Felicity stand."
It's worth noting that this could be in reference in a flashback -- although that's perhaps a little... small for Mericle to reference. Arrow tends to steer clear of time-travel and Earth-2 type scenarios. So what else does that leave?
The Arrow writers recently wrote out the Lazarus pit, because, well... holy convenient plot point Batman! However, we do still have the new appearance that is magic, so could Felicity be healed in the future?
As I said: no speculation. I'll leave that up to you. Do you reckon Felicity will be wheelchair bound forever, or will this be a temporary hurdle for the character to overcome?
