The Oscars are coming up and it has already been a contentious affair, what with the #OscarsSoWhite boycott and viral criticism of the evident lack of diversity in this year's nominee roster.
Here's a look over time at other Oscar award shows and a handful of controversies that occupied the mind's of industry followers and movie buffs at the time they happened.
1. Angelina's distractingly incestuous moment
Winning an Oscar for her performance in Girl, Interrupted, Angelina blushed and said the following:
"I'm so in love with my brother right now."
Later that evening she was then seen kissing her brother. Sheer open-mindedness or attention seeking?
2. David Niven and the streaker
At the 1974 Oscars, a man who was naked appeared behind David Niven making the peace sign. David's remark is almost as famous as the naked guy himself:
"...probably the only laugh that guy will get in his life by stripping off and showing his shortcomings."
3. Sacheen Littlefeather
Marlon Brando won the best actor award at the 1973 Oscars for his performance in The Godfather. Instead of Brando going up to receive it, a woman named Sacheen Littlefeather dressed in traditional Native American clothing went in his place.
She refused the award and told the confused crowd that Marlon was refusing to accept his Oscar because of the mistreatment of Native American people in the film industry.
4. Vanessa Redgrave's political speech
At the 1978 Oscars, Vanessa got herself into a politically uncomfortable situation by maintaining her integrity and voicing her honest views. At first the crowd was supportive when Redgrave condemned fascist and racist Nazi Germany, but then she brought up "Zionist hoodlums" who burned her in effigy because of her support for Palestine. At this point the crowd started to boo.
5. Adrien Brody and Halle Berry's winning smooch
Going forward in time a bit after the more politically driven controversies of the '70s, by the early '00s love had found its way back onto the winners' stage. When Adrien Brody got up to the stage to collect his Oscar for Best Actor for his The Pianist performance, the first thing he did was grab award presenter Halle Berry and smooched her in what was probably another Oscar winning performance.
6. Ben Stiller the Avatar
This is also another light hearted moment, do you guys remember when Ben Stiller dressed up as an Avatar at the 2010 Oscars? Gotta love a bit of Stiller.
7. The Return of Fantasy/Sci-Fi
It was a major moment for sci-fi/fantasy lovers when Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won the best picture award. This was the first time a film in this genre had won the award.
8. The unexpected appearance of Woody Allen
Despite his many nominations, Woody Allen is always saliently absent. However, in 2002, the iconic director made an appearance. This was probably spurred on by the recent 9/11 attacks.
9. J.Lo's questionable fashion choice
In 2001, J.Lo, who appears to be the queen of wardrobe malfunctions, wore see-through material with no bra. This being the 'Pre-Miley era' this was more shocking than it would be today.
10. Heath Ledger's posthumous win
During the heartbreaking moment when Heath Ledger posthumously won the award for Best Supporting Actor, Ledger's family went up to accept the award on his behalf.
