Atkins, South Beach, Dukan, 5:2; the world is full of insane fad diets that promise you a lifetime of slenderness and joy after an undisclosed period of miserable pain. A period of pain we tend not to go through because life is too short and food is wonderful.
Unfortunately for celebrities however, the pressure to be super skinny is nigh-on unavoidable, which can cause them to overlook the recommended healthy balance of nutrient rich food and exercise, and replace it with crazy crash diets most of us haven't even heard of. Like these five, for example:
1. Why eat actual food, when you could just pretend?
The Diet: The Breatharian Diet or The Air Diet
Celebrity Links: Michelle Pfeiffer, Madonna and 'Human Barbie' Valeria Lukyanova
The Breatharian diet believes that through meditation and upon reaching a certain level of consciousness, you can get all the nutrition and sustenance your body needs via oxygen and sunlight.
Apparently Pfeiffer was forced into the diet by a 'very controlling' couple,
“They worked with weights and put people on diets. Their thing was vegetarianism. They were very controlling. I wasn’t living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining. They believed that people in their highest state were breatharian.”
Crazy Rating: 11/10, 'cause of the probable death side-effect.
2. Of course-et was brutal!
The Diet: The Corset Diet
Celebrity Links: Jessica Alba, Kourtney Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Garner
To shed baby weight, Jessica Alba opted for the traditional and worryingly popular corset method, which trains your waist to be smaller by relentlessly squishing your ribs together and making it pretty impossible to eat anything comfortably.
"I wore a double corset day and night for three months. It was brutal; it’s not for everyone.”
Harvard trained doctor Sara Gottfried later told ABC news,
“If you’re wearing a corset 24/7, it can do a couple of things to your body. Namely, it will be squeezing your ribs so much that you can’t take a deep breath. Corsets can squish your lungs by 30 to 60 percent, making you breathe like a scared rabbit. They can also put a kink in your organs and cause constipation.”
Crazy Rating: 7/10. Besides the whole rib and lung squishing, which clearly isn't ideal, can we just think for a minute how sweaty this must be? Ew.
3. Total Lunacy
Diet: Werewolf Diet
Celebrity Links: Demi Moore, Madonna
The Werewolf Diet believes that the moon has control over the water levels in our bodies, its gravitational pull has a similar affect on us as it does the worlds oceans and thus its power can be harnessed to help lose weight. So basically, if you liquid cleanse during full moon, new moon or beginning of a moon phase, you can shed those pesky pounds.
The website Moon Connection explains,
'Consuming more fluids will call on the power of the moon, stimulate renal activity, and allow your body to lose its excess water. This flushes out the toxins that accumulate in the body due to unhealthy foods, bad digestion, and stress, and provides a detoxifying effect that will strengthen your immune system.'
Crazy Rating: 5/10 - It's pretty bizarre, but its less likely to cause serious side effects than the others. Real downside here is that if you're a minute late, it doesn't really work. Tbf though it probably doesn't work anyway.
4. Urine is the New Black
Diet: The HCG Diet
Celebrity Links: Orange Is The New Black star Laura Prepon
HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone which is released during pregnancy to help the baby grow but now forms the focal-point of a mad fad which believes that drops, pills or shots of the stuff can suppress your appetite. Which is just as well, because you pair your daily dose of pregnancy urine with a 500 calorie restricted diet.
Prepon (rather bravely) admitted,
"I've always done crazy crash diets. I've ruined my metabolism that way. I did the HCG diet—[you're injected with] a hormone that's extracted from the urine of pregnant women!"
Crazy Rating: 8/10. I feel like you already have to be a bit mad to seriously consider this an option.
5. Ice, Ice, Baby
Diet: Ice Cube Diet
Celebrity Links: Renee Zellweger
Eating ice cubs throughout the day can curb hunger, said nobody ever. Except they have, and depressingly, Rene Zellweger listened.
The Bridget Jones star tried to make it sound like it's not the worst thing ever,
“As long as I get that ‘constant feed’ feeling, it’s semi-tolerable.”
But she failed.
Crazy Rating: 3/10. If you're still eating normal meals then it's more sad than depressing.
It's called a healthy balance kids, let's not do this at home!
