No, you didn't read that headline wrong - Orange Is The New Black was created as a result of one Nigerian prince and his dubious actions. And no, I didn't escape from a mental institution to write this article, it's actually a true story!

Based on a book

The thing you need to know is that Orange is the New Black is actually based on a book. American author Piper Kerman wrote Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison after spending — you guessed it — a year in prison. Her girlfriend was a drug smuggler, and Piper ended up carrying a suitcase of laundered money across the Atlantic Ocean.

So how is this connected to a Nigerian prince?

The above picture shows Buruji Kashamu, a Nigerian prince and also the current senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly in Nigeria.

Allegedly, he was the leader of the drug ring that Piper Kerman laundered money for. He has naturally denied this claim, and told officials that it's a case of a mistaken identity — apparently his brother was the one leading the drug ring. His brother is now dead, so there's no way of knowing for sure. However, according to court records Buruju was romantically involved with Catherine Cleary Wolters — the sister of Piper's girlfriend. So somehow he is connected to the events in Orange is the New Black, and if Piper hadn't written her book we wouldn't have such a great show.

So thank you Piper, Buruju and Netflix — without you we wouldn't be able to enjoy our favorite show Orange is the New Black!
