Firaxis Games will be releasing the sequel to their 2012 turn-based tactical video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, on February 5th 2016. The sequel, XCOM 2, promises to improve upon every aspect of Enemy Unknown, to deliver something special for PC owners in the cold Winter months. We couldn't be more excited to get our hands on this sequel!
But for those of you who are unfamiliar with the XCOM series and are interested in getting in on the action, there's something you should know before jumping into XCOM 2 - XCOM: Enemy Unknown needs to be played first. Why? Let me tell you why!
Before XCOM 2, You NEED To Play XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Now, XCOM 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown aren't exactly linked with one another. In fact, XCOM 2 takes place 20 years after the events of the first game in a version of the universe were humanity lost the fight against the Alien invasion. Therefore, if you've played Enemy Unknown and overcame the odds, the story of XCOM 2 doesn't really make sense for you.
So why do you need to play XCOM: Enemy Unknown before XCOM 2, then? Well I have two reasons for you: 1. I'm afraid that it'll make the first game obsolete.
XCOM 2 looks like it could be a gamer's dream if it expands on everything Enemy Unknown gave us and improves on its various gameplay elements. If the game is as good as I hope it will be, there might not be any need to go back and play Enemy Unknown if you never have. In fact, it might alter your opinion of the game and it'll feel like a lesser product. I really don't want this to happen. Why? That brings us to reason number 2.
Best. Gameplay. Ever.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, I think it IS one of the greatest games of all time. This may seem like a bold statement, but to a gamer who never much cared for tactical, turn-based titles, XCOM: Enemy Unknown felt like an awakening. I felt like I'd missed out on the exhilarating experiences of countless strategy-type games. But then I realized, it was just XCOM I was enjoying.
I can't even begin to describe how taken aback I was by how much I enjoyed this title. From the minute management of my XCOM base, to the tactical execution of battle, I was engrossed and I was hooked. The feeling of nailing that lethal alien just at the right second was so satisfying. The permanent loss of one of my operatives was devastating. And the retro feel to its narrative and execution was perfect.
I can't really hype it anymore. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of the best games out there, and it's about to get a sequel in a matter of weeks. X-COM 2 could force players to ignore Enemy Unknown and simply engage in its sequel. But I guarantee that the upgrades for XCOM 2 will feel so much better having come from Enemy Unknown. Do yourselves a favor and play the shit out of XCOM: Enemy Unknown until February 5th, and then (and only then) can you hope that XCOM 2 blows it out of the water!
