Rejoice, my brethren! This is our year! We have never, as geeks and nerds, felt such hype as this year! THIS IS OUR YEAR!! THIS YEAR, WE DINE IN THE THEATER BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE AMAZING SUPERHERO MOVIES BEING RELEASED THIS YEAR!!!!
Like that 300 reference I made? Anyway, as most of us geeks and nerds know, 2016 will be an amazing year for superhero movies. As geeks, there has never been a better time in life to be actively involved within superheroes. The most superhero movies we had within one year was four movies, back in 2013. These movies were Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, and Thor: The Dark World.
A total of 10 superhero movies are coming out this year! That's more than double than what we got in 2013! Whether you're Team Marvel, Team DC, both, or none, at least one of these movies you will see this year. These 9 movies are Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Star Trek: Beyond, Suicide Squad, Gambit, Doctor Strange, and Star Wars: Rogue One.
First, A Salute to the Kickoff of the Superhero Movie Season
This movie not only shattered numerous records, it also kicked off the superhero movie season. It took many back to their childhood with the inclusion of Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa, three main characters of the original trilogy. These new characters, such as Finn, Rey, Poe Dameron, Captain Phasma, and Kylo Ren give off a familiar vibe. This vibe is very similar to that of the original trilogy, something that the fans have been longing for. What a great way to start the season! As a fellow Star Wars fan, the movie was everything I thought it would be and more, and there was no better way to kick off the season than with this movie. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened in theaters on December 18, 2015.
Deadpool is the first superhero movie coming out in 2016. It's been the movie we've been waiting for ever since X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn't do justice to Wade Wilson as a character. By far the funniest movie in this lineup, it will provide both a superhero movie-like element, with classic comedy from the Merc with a Mouth himself. Deadpool hits theaters on February 12, 2016.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Out of all of the movies being released this year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the one that people are most excited about. It's the movie us geeks have been waiting for. We might have gotten a good look at Batman fighting Superman in The Dark Knight Returns: Part 2, but this live-action version including Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg (possibly) is what we've been waiting for. And from Trailer #2, we saw the one and only Doomsday! So it's Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (possibly including Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg) vs. Doomsday and Lex Luthor. Sounds like nothin' but a good time! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
Captain America: Civil War
This movie is the most anticipated Marvel movie this year. Captain America: Civil War is based off of the Civil War storyline in the Marvel Comics, one of the biggest story-arcs of all time. It's Captain America vs. Iron Man in this one, and no punches will be pulled here. Team Captain America (Captain America, the Winter Soldier, the Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Agent Sharon Carter, and Ant-Man) and Team Iron Man (Iron Man, War Machine, the Vision, Black Panther, and Black Widow) will duke it out, and with Crossbones and Spider-Man into the mix, this movie could be a new high for Marvel. Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
X-Men: Apocalypse takes place after the events in the past of X-Men: Days of Future Past, after we allegedly saw Apocalypse forming the three Egyptian pyramids. We will see younger versions of Jean Grey, Storm, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler as well as Magneto, Professor X, and Psylocke. The X-Men will face the biggest threat they have ever faced, one of the most powerful Marvel villains ever created, Apocalypse. X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is the sequel to the 2014 movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Many trash the 2014 movie, but in my opinion it was a very good movie. It featured Shredder as the main villain. Shredder is to the Ninja Turtles like the Joker is to Batman. The upcoming movie will feature two fan-favorite villains, Rocksteady and Bebop. Adding these two into the film builds anticipation for the film's release, and how the characters will be presented. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows hits theaters on June 3, 2016.
Star Trek: Beyond
Many of you will probably stone me for saying what I'm about to say, but I am not a Trekkie. However, after seeing the trailer for this movie, I really want to get into it. Set photos were released, and many are hyped for the third movie in the Star Trek reboot series. The trailer was absolutely incredible, and I hope to get the time to watch all of the Star Trek movies in the near future. Star Trek: Beyond hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
Ever since the release of the first trailer for this movie, people have been hyped from that point forward. Suicide Squad is a movie about a group of villains doing the job that heroes would normally do. This group includes the Joker, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, and many more. The concept of this is amazing, but can this movie pull it off? In my opinion, it has the potential to be better than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Suicide Squad hits thaters on August 5, 2016.
Not much is known about this movie. According to my sources it's supposed to be released later this year. We haven't seen any photos, trailers, teaser trailers, or even official news about filming. This Gambit movie allegedly comes out on October 7, 2016.
Like Gambit, not much is known about this movie. However, we have seen set photos, and these Entertainment Weekly photos of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Many people, myself included, are excited for this film. Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor, and I believe he will pull the role off and be an amazing Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
Star Wars: Rogue One
Like the previous two films, not too much is known about this movie. Allegedly it takes place before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. From 2015 through 2019, we will be getting one Star Wars film every year. In 2015, it was Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In 2016, it's Star Wars: Rogue One. In 2017, we're getting Star Wars: Episode VIII. In 2018, we're getting a Han Solo-based movie. To top it off, in 2019 we're getting Star Wars: Episode IX. Star Wars: Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
